We recently converted from hydraulic steering
to mechanical steering
(chain and cable). We are keeping the hydraulic ram & motor
for use with the autopilot
(Raymarine ST6002). In order to be able to steer with the wheel
(autopilot disengaged), I know Raymarine
suggests a solenoid-operated bypass valve (electronic) but since we had a check valve block (mechanical) on the old system, I'm wondering if there's any way to connect that to our new setup so that I can keep the bypass mechanical. Obviously the motor
will be electrical
so it wouldn't be a fully mechanical system.
Has anyone ever successfully done this?
Here's a couple pictures - the first is the way it was set up when it was purely hydraulic, and the second is the way Raymarine
suggests now that we are using a hydraulic autopilot
with mechanical steering
Also, if anyone has any creative designs for the reservoir that I need to build which will attach to the autopilot pump, please let me know. (The helm
pump was the reservoir in the old purely hydraulic system.)
