Lost at Sea from S/V 'Triple Stars'
I am starting this new thread to separate comments about Jan being lost overboard from the NARC Rally discussion ( 2011 NARC Rally). Perhaps one of the mods will pull other related comments out of that thread, as appropriate.
We first met Rob and Jan in Barra de Navidad, Mexico, Feb. 18, 2008. We crossed paths with them a few times after that and waited a few weeks with them in Marina Chahue for a satisfactory weather window to cross the Gulf of Tehuantepec. We really bonded, though, during our six weeks in Bahia del Sol, El Salvador. From our harrowing crossing of the bar ( Picasa Web Albums - John Bickford - Crossing_the_Bar) to the afternoon volleyball games and karaoke, Jan was always cheerful, thoughtful, and friendly to all. We were looking forward to meeting up with Triple Stars again this coming cruising season in the USVI.
Jan will be missed greatly.

That is one sick bar crossing dude.
RIP Jan. Any further details on what happened? Was she on watch and Rob below?

Thank you for creating a separation and providing real experience and testimony. It would have been wrong to. Let a fellow sailor pass without some context. I am sure there is much more to her life.
It is nice that you reminded us that it was nor just a tragic incident but a travelled sailor that is lost.

Re: Lost at Sea from S/V Triple Stars
Here's a link to their cruising blog. Keep my mom in your prayers | The Anderson Adventures Ironically, her last post was to let family and friends know they were hove to waiting out TS Sean, and were okay.
Looking at their boat is like looking at my former IP 380. I can't even think about this tragedy without having a visceral reaction and imagining what it would be like to be in the same situation. Very heart-wrenching, very sad!

what boatman said...
this is something that hits waaay too close to home for all of us. there are no words to describe the loss or to make it better.
all we can do is celebrate life--it is waaay too short.

Re: Lost at Sea from S/V 'Triple Stars'
My husband, Lyman, and I shared many adventures with Jan and Rob during the year we sailed with them. We are devastated by this loss. Words are too inadequate to express it. We loved her dearly and ache for Rob, who met Jan when they were both just twelve years old. They have been devoted to each other ever since; a very rare and wonderful relationship.
Jan was a woman you loved instantly. Her warm and giving nature pulled you close immediately. Her sunny attitude never dimmed. She had the strength to overcome fears, to put herself out there in order to live life fully. Life delighted her.
For all the past memories we shared and all the future memories that have been taken from us, I mourn deeply. You will always live in my heart, Jan.
Thank you, John Bickford (s/v Yachtsman's Dream, for starting this thread.

From your description, everyone of us who understands and respects the sea, is that much poorer today at Rob's loss. Vaya Con Dios Jan.

Re: Lost at Sea from S/V 'Triple Stars'
Although we didn't know Rob and Jan personally, we were on the 2007 Baja Ha-Ha with them and have many friends in common. Our friends' blogs were peppered with stories of good times in company with Triple Stars, and our hearts go out not only to Rob and his family, but also to our friends who will so dearly miss their good friend. All of us who cross oceans know that tragedy can strike despite our best efforts to prevent it.

Re: Lost at Sea from S/V 'Triple Stars'
Most of us here never had the good fortune to share their good times, and can't possibly imagine their grief.
But the loss of a kindred spirit we feel very deeply.
All strength to you now.
