Looking for advice on sailing school / ed

Seems like ASA is the most popular standard. There's a place in Annapolis that also offers a NauticEd cert.

Is there anyplace I can get ASA 101-104+114 in the DC area that doesn't require me to spend four or five consecutive days on the boat?

I'm really hoping there is.

Re: Looking for advice on sailing school / ed

I rather doubt it. If you look at an ASA log book you will see that each certification has a "knowledge" requirement and a "skills" requirement.

To receive an ASA certification sticker at any level you have to pass a written test for the "knowledge" requirement as well as have an ASA instructor sign off on all the skills listed in "skills" requirement.

You may have the knowledge to pass the written test without ever getting on a boat but it seems unlikely an instructor would sign off on the skills required without seeing them performed.

I guess it's possible if you have a long sailing resume and an instructor who is confident of your skills but other than that I would say it's about as likely as finding a DMV that would give a 16 year old a driver's license without requiring them to take a driving test.
