Learning it all...

I will be graduating college next year and I'm very curious about the sailing lifestyle. It's been a dream of mine to one day own/live on a boat and sail. I grew up in the midwest so I've barely sailed beyond my Dad's 14 footer and a little Sunfish, neither of which I've done in years. As soon as i get home for the summer I'll be out on that boat learning the simple things again.

the question is: How can i get hands on learning ona larger boat, so that one day I may be able to own and operate my own? I've looked up numerous courses/schools which don't seem all that expensive, but classroom and weekend learning don't seem the best way. Are there crews I could jump on board with? Or veteran sailors our there looking for some young bucks to climb aboard their craft for a summer or longer?

Or if any of you could relate how YOU learned, that would also be very helpful.

Thanks, I'm all ears.

Walk the docks the night of beer can races. If you are from the S.F. Bay Area you could run an ad in Latitude 38. Show up in marinas, and post a notice. Remember the SQUEAKY WHEEL gets the grease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
