Knots For Deck Jerry Cans

Folks,

I'm looking for knots to use to firmly tighten jerry cans to our stanchion board. I previously used bungies but the sun quickly ate them up.

Re: knots for deck jerry cans

I use a combination of bowlines, truckers hitches and taut line hitches

Take shorter trips? Hee hee. Okay. Bowsing down is fairly well-refined. Seine twine is strong, useful stuff, and cheap! If you need elasticity, you might work in those heavy black bungees that truckers use. I'd worry more about the attachment points than I would a good series of robands.

I know it is not knots, but have you considered ratchet binders, (with the stainless steel ratchets).
Costs more than rope and knots, but is tidy, and quick to secure and release.

Tried and true - truckers hitches.

I have used ratchets for years. MUCH easier to get undone and redone. Get them from trucker websites, not marine websites. Check these, for ex

Nice website. I stumbled across it a couple months ago while searching for knots. My "engineman" knots weren't cutting it after buying my sailboat.

If you do use the ratchet straps, buy the good ones. The cheap Chinese ones the staps rot in the sun in a couple of months

OHhh, I know that I shouldn't do this, but I'm weak...

The best knot for on deck jerry can stowage is to NOT have them. Jerry cans on deck, that is. Unseamanlike IMO.

What is the basis for un seamanlike. Is it something that a person can catch like a cold or maybe a way of thinking like from a book of seamanlike rules. I always had to have water cans and diesel cans tied to my side boards. Either that or on the cabin floor. Mac

As I said, this judgement is my opinion. The opinion is based on seeing boats with stanchions and lifelines carried away by a combination of boarding seas and jerry jugs lashed thereto. It is based on not wanting a few hundred kilos of added weight at that height. It is based on reduced visibility from the cockpit when heeled. And while it is arguably not a seamanship matter, they spoil the looks of some vessels.

Your opinion may differ, and there are certainly many cruising boats that sport racks of cans on deck. My boats have never done so.

Knots For Deck Jerry Cans

I used 1-1/2" nylon strapping and routed 2 slits per strap, two vertical and two horizontally, in my 1x3 board that was attached with u bolts to the stanchions. I ran two straps per diesel can. One ran vertical and one horizontally and ran them through the handles. I used plastic side release buckles. They are easy to secure and undo. I had 5 jerry cans on my starboard side during my cruise last year. I run my generator full time so consume more fuel than most cruisers. We keep the heat and air running down below and have no humidity problems and it is always comfortable. I pick my crossing weather, so I am not concerned too much with having a storm come up and wash them off the deck. In 6 foot seas, they do not move.

Re: Knots For Deck Jerry Cans

good ratchets for truckers dont rust easily. They put salt on the roads here in the NE so they have to make them out of good materials. Mine were advertised as "impervious to road salt". That might have been a bit of an exaggeration but they are still just fine after 3 years. Just be sure to rinse after a passage. And at 6 bucks a pop, I dont expect them to last forever anyway. Not a major expense compared to some of the stuff I routinely shell out for. But hey if you enjoy tying and untying knots then by all means go for it! I can never get a knot as tight as a ratchet but maybe that's just me.
