Integrated soft shackle in single braid dyneema

I will have to replace some of my halyards, and thinking about using single braid dyneema tails. Is there a good way to splice a soft shackle into the end of the halyard?

Yes, he had a nice way of doing it. Put the knot on the sail and the eye on the halyard:-)

I found this, this is an elegant solution:

Related question: I’ve never understood why soft shackles are made from Type II lines. If they’re stronger than the, say, sheet they’re supporting, why not make the shackle out of the same material?

Could anyone enlighten me?

Quite UV stable, is my best guess. Also, slippery, so easier to open and close. But I think you can make them from basically any material. Once upon a time, on sailing ships, soft shackles were made from hemp.

Thanks, Martin.

I figured it was a matter of: this line is stronger than steel! We can make a shackle. And off it went.
So, if you make it from Type I, you want a sleeve for UV protection.

Here's a few reasons:

1. You can use much smaller diameter rope. For 10-14mm sheets/halyards, you can use 6mm soft shackles which are much smaller and handier.

2. t's much easier to make them with single braid.

3. Drop one in the water and it floats.

Also very abrasion resistant.

For what it's worth, I made some 3-ft loop diameter soft shackles to attach my "fender step" to the boarding gate stanchions, using some left-over double-braid polyester line. I removed the core and used the cover to make the shackles. It was originally 3/8" line so the cover was plenty strong.
