They tried to screw a board over the hole but couldn't get the screws to bite and self drill just using a manual screw driver or driving them with a hammer. If you have an electric drill, a self tapping screw will eventually drill through an FRP layup but way faster to drill a pilot hole then insert the screw. Never tried it on anything as thick as the hull, though. In any case, an electric drill would be useless with a serious leak unless you like that tingly feeling or don't mind ruining a battery powered drill. That leaves a manual drill as the only way to screw a patch onto a leak.

Mine looks like this. Alloy housing with stainless gears, shaft and chuck--even the chuck key is stainless! Found it on eBay.
