Hunter Passage 42 auto pilot failure

While sailing, my auto pilot intermittently loses steering when it has to steer to starboard. Sitting at the dock, I can turn the dial on the ST8002 head to port and the steering wheel moves to the limit of the linear drive. When I turn to starboard, I get a "noruddref" message and then it reverts to standby status.
