Re: Howling today in the PNW

Smith Island (just south of the San Juans) is reporting 55 kt gusts. (link: NDBC - Station SISW1)

The usually tiny waves off our beach have jumped way up and the whitecaps are turning into spray. I'm glad I moved the boat to a safe spot yesterday!

Glad I moved the boat to a safe spot - Samoa!

We miss cruising the PNW and look forward to more in the future. Good luck to all today.

Who needs Netflix or TV when you have a storm and channel 16/22 ?

Coast Guard is busy with picking up fishermen in the water from overturned skiff off Camano Island.

I didn't think fishing was worth risking your life to 48 degree water.

You should have a good downwind ride. I would carefully check tides at Cattle Point at my ETA there and use care if the tide is ebbing, running contrary to the 10-20kt SE wind in the pm.

Where does one find a synoptic chart for the US?

Not this ... National Weather Service - Graphical Forecast

This ... hillsrain.com - Karoonda Tornado

Re: Howling today in the PNW

I watched a sailboat sink this evening.

It is normal for Port Townsend to have at least a dozen pleasure boats anchored out at any given time DURING THE SUMMER. This is fine 99% of the time because the Summer time prevailing wind blows off shore (from the west). This weather system brought on-shore wind with a 4 mile fetch.

I arrived at the scene of this boats demise about 15 minutes too late to determine exactly what transpired (I am sure I will find out tomorrow). What I witnessed when I first climbed to a vantage point allowing this photo to be taken, was the stricken vessel 90% submerged. Only her transom and 1/2 half of her mast were above water. By the time I dug my phone out of my pocket and activated the camera function, The boat had settled has shown. A few seconds later, the masthead disappeared. The pictured Vessel Assist boat appeared to be towing the stricken vessel.

She appeared to be perhaps 30 feet long and is now laying on the bottom in about 40 feet of water.

I cannot, however, get used to the concept of pressure read in inches. 1 bar is such a completely intuitive measure and pressure read in millibars so useful and clear that I really do wonder what drives the US to hold on to the imperial system in such a case? I mean… fractional sizes in tooling can be useful> I applaud the difference in thread diameter and pitch, and find it useful, particularly when rethreading from metric stainless bolts in aluminium to imperial for a stopgap prior to helicoiling or similar, but holding on to the idea of pressure measured in inches of mercury in such an arbitrary scale really does seem perverse to me.

Anyhow, thanks again for posting!

Re: Howling today in the PNW

It was rocking and rolling at the dock in Blaine. Trees down and power outages - about 6 hours for us, more for others. AND YET, during a lull three small boats went out to pull their crab pots. Gotta be amazed at some things.........

Re: Howling today in the PNW

My Taswell was heeling over 10 degrees tied to the dock in Poulsbo. The boats anemometer read gusts in the mid 60's. Yikes!
