How to make money while sailing?

Is there any way you can make money while sailing still?
Do people still deliver tobacco and rum to ports?

Re: How to make money while sailing?

rodlmao----friends of mine do computer stuff for dough-like running companies as the financial operative or as a consultant somehow--as i am puter illiterate, i dont know details but they seem plenty happy doing this and it doesnt interfere with the local work force. some even do graphic arts work.
one must have talent to do stuff while cruising and an ability to think outside the box..
there are penalties for smuggling, so if you are to be transporting stuff, get the proper paperwork ..

We have a fairly fixed income from previous investments which covers our basic day-to-day living costs.

All of the visa, boat repair and improvement money comes from working about a day a week programming and IT consulting. If I was willing to work two days a week we could cover our living costs as well

In todays connected world you just need some kind of job you can do over the Internet.

Re: How to make money while sailing?

If I was cruising the seven seas, my boat would: 1) Have an ice cream maker and the ingredients needed for making five different flavors. I don't know of any sailor/boat who wouldn't want to buy a gallon of ice cream!; 2) Be outfitted with a satellite telecom hub; internet, phone, email, power charging for batteries and toys. You'd pull up by my boat, connect to whichever service(s) you need for a flat fee per 15 minutes of usage. Installing a satellite hub is pricey, but once installed it will pay for itself in probably a couple of years of "service rentals"; 3) Advertise that I can troubleshoot your electrical/electronics systems, for a flat fee. That's how I'd make money while sailing!

A juggler back in the 80s/90's by the name of Ray Jason did that and was able to stay out there for some time. I believe his boat was named "Aventura". He wrote a book which was quite entertaining.

Thanks, Celestialsailor. I looked it up, "Tales of a Sea Gypsy". I just added it to my read list on amazon. I assumed there were other variety artists out there sailing, but I just hadn't heard of any.

Re: How to make money while sailing?

You start a business and spend years (decades) putting pieces of the puzzle together. You compartmentalize your business and concentrate on the processes needed to perform the specific task needed to make that department successful.
Along the way you hire smart, talented people and give them the wherewithal to manage the processes specific to those departments and you reward them for this talent and dedication.
One day, if you're lucky, you realize that the young staff doesn't need you around all that much anymore. The state of travel today makes it possible for me to come back to the office when and if I want to.
That's my plan anyway.

Good plan. Reminds me of a story I read about a Canadian businessman about 20-30 years ago. I heard about him when I got into cave diving. He was one of the first explorers of the blue holes in the Bahamas and was pretty well known in the sport. He lived on a power boat in the islands and spent almost all his time there.

The subject came up about how he supported the life style. He had spent years building a business in Canada and once it was doing very well he hired a manager to run it. After he felt like the manager was up to speed the owner announced he was moving to the Bahamas. The manager asked what he should do if a problem came up with the business that he couldn't take care of. No problem said the owner, just call me, I'll fly back to Canada, sort things out, hire a new manager and fly back to the Bahamas.

I don't think he got too many calls.

For myself, I'm lucky enough to have a job I can do 95% by phone and email. Get me a sat phone and I can work from anywhere.
