How to identify rope?

We inherited a lot of ropes. Most of them look and feel like old running rigging. One, however is very bright white and red. While having a long length of new rope seemed exciting, this one just doesn't have a good feel to it. It is stiff and seems twisted and kinked no matter how well you follow good protocol. So much so, we threw it in the wash, thinking it might have been dunked in sea water at some point, despite its shiny appearance. It still feels the same.

Looks like New England Ropes Sta-SetX to me. Yes, that is stiff rope that kinks easily.

Staset X. Yes, it has a "characteristic" feel. Lower stretch, some like it, many don't. Halyard only.

We seem to have about 100 ft of it, so it is more likely to become a reef line than a halyard. Perhaps it was just sitting around because someone measured point to point and didn't take into consider that a halyard doesn't just run up the mast and back, you have to cleat it off somewhere. We got 125 ft. when we replaced the spin halyard.

They are all ropes until they have an assigned purpose. And I am not sure even I could figure out how to incorporate the bolt rope into sex.

The eye splice for Sta Set X is much different than for double braid and kind of interesting to do, if you like splicing.

Hi, Greenhand,

I'd suggest you visit your local chandlery with the best selection of line. Touch it, feel it. Record who has made it (lots of manufacturers). Then do a compare and contrast via their websites for the strengths and recommended uses of the lines.

FWIW, we use spectra for halyards, mainsheet, and reef lines, and double braid oversized for chafe protection for genoa sheets, and about 12 mm double braid for our staysail sheets and double preventers. Not all line is the size it claims to be, either, weird, eh?

You will develop your own preferences through experimentation.

Yes. I think Greenhand is correct.

I quickly flipped through my copy of Naughty Knots: Light Bondage & Bedroom Tricks (illustrations are credited to John Tomaselli, cover by Danielle Deschenes, but no author is named; published by Potter Style; see: Naughty Knots by Potter Style - eBook - Random House) and found no role for a bolt rope.

It's a fun book.

Great diagrams, neat riffs on using variations of Lark's Head and Prussic.
