How Far Have You Sailed?

The other day I saw a thread where someone pointed out, as a matter of experience that they had sailed over 10,000 miles and anchored over 100 times. That sounds like a lot, but is it really, for someone with a life-long sailing habit?

About 6 months ago I was reviewing my experience log, and in 30 years, it added up to a larger sum than I was expecting. The actual miles of coastline were only a few thousand, but I've sailed all of it a lot more than once. I passed "anchored 100 times" several boats ago.

So how far have you sailed? I'll bet there are some big numbers out there.

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

Since my first self-owned boat wasn't obtained until a little over 4 years ago, I'm at about 2500 miles, the first 750 on Cayuga Lake, and the rest on Lake Ontario. Still learn every time I go out, still new experiences to be had, and not nearly as impressive a resume as many. For me though, it's not just the mileage, it's the quality of each mile along the way.

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

The log on the plotter says 35361 NM. That's on this boat, in eight years.

We owned our last boat for about 10 years, didn't do as many miles though. Maybe 10,000 maybe less. Work and stuff....

We live on the anchor about 50 weeks a year. Don't know exactly how many times we've anchored, would be in the thousands though.

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

Almost full time since 2009, travelling mode not in the one spot. I would estimate very similar to Cc44 above. Up around 8,500nm in last 12 mths.
Lucky if I averaged a month a year in a marina.

Hmm, I haven't really counted. I was wondering about Baxter recently, though. My dog's done about 16,000, pretty much all in the role of tactician. He's a pretty salty dog...

He totally sucks at calling the gybe, though. I suspect he doesn't want to have to switch sides in the cockpit, so we overshoot most of the time.

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

I lost track long ago, but well over 100000. Actually, miles are not important. You learn the most in the first few 100 and then the learning curve kind of flattens out. Of course you find yourself in a new situation now and then, and the learning never stops. Emergency situations are actually the best teachers

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

We've always kept a log for personal reasons as well as for ship husbandry, and so accumulated miles are recorded.

First serious boat: Yankee 30, a bit over 25,000 over seven years ownership.

Second boat, in which we started full time cruising: Standfast 36, and just over 86,000 miles in 17 years ownership.

Current boat, still cruising: now at 59,800+ miles.

We have lived primarily at anchor since 1986, and I've no idea how many times we've dropped the hook... several thousand, I suppose.

Dunno that these numbers mean much, but they live on in our logs and in our memories... the joys of cruising!

pirate Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

To be honest I cant give an accurate number.. never really counted as such.. did live 4yrs on the hook cruising round the Western Med.. did do 19000 miles in 9mths in 2012..
Guess if I totted up my deliveries and time afloat since 86 and my 1st boat it would be a few miles.

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

The most I've ever heard of (and Believe) is 500,000. Thats a hell of a lot of hours at sea...

For me, a comparatively miniscule 50,000 odd. A bit more than 2x around the world at the equator....
And more than 1000 nights at anchor.

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

I’ve lost thee anchors. A measure of miles or ineptitude, probably both.

The don’t know that mileage is a great measure of much. I’ve gone many miles on autopilot with nary a thought. And I’ve had 15 minutes of terror (multiple times) in waters that seemed designed to ensure my demise.

Maybe some more measures- how many times:

Up the mast

Hit by lightning

Went out to save a boat when USCG refused to leave harbor

Stared in awe at what must be, once again, the most stunning sunset you’ve ever seen.

Re: How Far Have You Sailed?

Are Cat miles measured the same as Mono miles.
I have 850 very proud nm which is one trip across the Gulf.
We’re leaving in November to start adding miles to our counter.

Going by marina charges for catamarans, your miles should be multiplied by x1.5 - 1.75.
