Our stuff does not forereach hove too. She will drift, at an angle, to the lee, at some 0.5 to 1.5 knots.

I've always wondered, why can't you use the Jordan drogue off the bow as a sea anchor?

When people complain about how hard it is to retrieve a Jordan drogue, wouldn't it be a lot easier to take the line forward and bring it in over the bow, perhaps with the windlass?

2Wind,

One thing I would add is we tried the same technique in about 10kts of wind and the L450 behaved very differently. All that ever happened was the yacht slowly tacked itself. It needs a strong wind to try in so the main balances the effect of the bows wanting to rapidly bear away downwind.

When we anchored in 60kts until we got the bridle on I was using FULL forward and FULL reverse on the engines to stop the bow from swinging rapidly downwind:

Cheers, Dave

Hove to +60 knots. Leech cord broke? Ejaculated battens. Leech cord knotted self around running backstay. Had to send someone aloft in a lull to cut it free. After that, no main sail, no heaving to. Then you run with it for three days. If you have room that is.

Pls do yourselves a favor and read the link below. I consider that information as the most important of all for any type of cruiser. Amazing stuff.

I'm new to the forum and I'm viewing as many threads as possible.
Whenever applicable I like to get sailors to learn about the wave theories

Jordan Series Drogue - Mooring and Anchoring

and to start using the Jordan type serial drogue . In my view this could save many lives, boats and rescue missions ( I have no monetary interest in this).
At the very least I'd like for everyone to try mooring stern to.

So do you sew the cones with the edges inwards or outwards?

If I ever make one, I will flat fell the cone seams, and double hem the leading edges. I'll use PTFE thread, too, because i think it will hold up better in use. I do not view JSDs as one time use tools. They are costly enough to make, in terms of time and money, that they should serve the lifetime of the boat... just mho. When you arrive where there is fresh water available, wash, air dry, and stow. Sort of like foul wx gear.

Re: Heaving and Hoving: The "Science" and the "Art".

The drogues are not that expensive to buy. The cost depends on the boat's displacement.
Contact : Ace Sailmakers: Dave <acesailmakers@yahoo.com>
for a quote. I've read many accounts of people using them repeatedly , so they do last for years.
Here is a recent quote for a complete system for my Gemini catamatran.
HI,

7000 loaded multi hull

HI,

Design Load Drogue 10,000 lbs, bridle legs 7000 lbs

The design load for each drogue configuration is adjusted for the displacement of the yacht.
The design load is the ultimate, once in a lifetime, peak transient load that would be imposed on the drogue in a “worst case” breaking wave strike. The working load during a severe storm is about 10 % of this value.

inventor's advice

Jordan Series Drogue - Design Loads and Attachments

"The hull attachments for the drogue should be as far outboard and as far aft as possible."

I'd go to main hull, as you say below, much stronger.

Will bridle legs shackle to hardware? In which case, boat ends bridle legs would have extra heavy closed ssteel thimbles.
Drogue quote:
rode length 130 cones x 1.67 feet plus 50 feet = 267 feet.

Price = 132 cones x $10 plus cost of rode. $7 per cone plus $3 per to install. $1320.
some rode options:

A: Rode could be all 5 /16ths Amsteel Blue, 12300 lbs minimum tensile. : Need 277 feet to get 267 feet with splice allowances, plus 2 splices, exttra heavy closed ssteel thimble. Cheapest I find it on lie is $1.77 per foot, Defenders Marine $1.89.
277 x 1.77= $490 plus $48 splices, thimble and chafe sleeve $10, $548

or

B: 127 finished 5/16 ths Amsteel Blue attached to 140 feet half inch double braid polyester. $435

So, Hybrid rode drogue $1300 plus $435 = $1735. Discounted to $1600 for a week, Less 3.5% if wired funds.

Plus bridle legs, chafe gear, optional chain for tail end, optional sleeve over chain.

Currently have an aft section complete.
thank you,

Dave Pelissier
