Two 65 year old Scandinavians refused an $800.00 tow in Bad weather.....then the engine quit. Another case for unlimited towing insurance.

Suffice it to say...I know this vessel well.

$800.00 tow vs $50,000.00 Salvage......

I believe that is the Force 50 (Captain Ron boat) that lived in Santa Cruz, Ca. The things weigh over 25 tons! No wonder that diesel truck had such a bad time of it. They were extremely lucky not to have lost it.

Just thought I would refresh this.

This was a dream....project boat...."we are going to sail awy with the kids.

I remember my Westsail 32 with it's unreliable two cylinder volvo diesel. I could never count on it starting when I needed it. It always made me nervous coming in to port in marginal conditions or when there were reefs close by. If the engine quit at an inopportune moment, disaster could happen.

Having two engines was one of the reasons I liked my catamaran so much. I always had a spare engine to prevent disaster should one engine go down. In fourteen years of ownership and cruising around the world, I have never lost two engines at the same time.

On of my friends had twin 38 hp Yanmars side by side in his fifty foot monohull cutter. The twin engines were great when he lost one of his props in the south Pacific.

If I had unlimited finances and was going the custom monohull route, I would have one built with a dual engine installation.

The only problem the truck had by the sound o it was probably his trailer brakes not releasing. When he gets out of the truck and set his brakes, you only hear the tractor brakes setting. He was just taking it real easy because of the rough terrain. That's why he stopped when he got to the pavement to reset all of his straps after coming off of the beach. 25 tons would be just a normal load weight wise for a drop deck.
Still a shame they put their boat on the beach, just to save a couple of dollars...

Chief- Your getting grumpy. I know it's hot in the mid Atlantic but this is just a case of scandinavian thrift. Septegenarian scandahoovians can do what they want. If they want to run their boat onto the beach---- well it's their party. Go fix something, you'll feel better.
