For Those That Like Rough Weather

Hurricaine Dagmar is crossing Denmark right now. For those of you that like heavy weather sailing, hit the link and scroll halfway down - there's a short video of a ship in the north sea - 12 meter high waves.

I like the comfort of my living room and a glass of wine

That actually does not look too bad, at least that short clip. Big long rollers and not breaking bad. Not that I would want to be out there if I didn't have to though, lol.

Well I certainly agree- it looks sailable.

But given the choice of sitting in my salon or living room sipping a good red wine or sailing around out in that.............................

Well - I do like my creature comforts

In my experience when you take videos of offshore seas they always look quite tame but when you are out there not so tame, enjoy your drink

Whoa! Doesn't look too tame to me. You'd think even those guys would avoid being out there if they could help it.

Re: For Those That Like Rough Weather

That ws hurricaine Dagmar that hit us yesterday. Just to make sure that we don't get complacent here in Denmark, Momma nature is sending Hurricaine Egon at us today. Weather report says stronger winds and inshore flooding to expected (sigh - triple checked my slip liines this morning. Capri is in a canal off the main harbour in Copenhagen, normal water level is about 1 1/2 meters below the level of the dock - I've got 6 lines on her now - 2 springs, 2 front and 2 back - all 25mm including rubber dogbones).

10:30 and the winds are picking up. The center of this storm is 951 hPa. right now in Copenhagen we're at 983 hPa.

Time to break out another bottle of red................................

So, that's what 12 meters waves looks like? It looks like a Sunday in late October on the San Francisco Bay.

I think there was an error in loading the video.

BTW the ad by Volkswagen is appealing.

Re: For Those That Like Rough Weather

As far as I can tell it's January and my SO assures me that Denmark is in the northern hemisphere. Hurricanes? I don't want to be out in seas like that - I may have to revise my sailing plans.

Re: For Those That Like Rough Weather

That looks like Esbjerg in the first video, well sheltered harbour.

The left over of the hurricane came across Scotland yesterday, causing the usual chaos, power out to about 30000 homes, bridges close and a few trucks blown over.
Not too bad on the east coast where I am, but getting gusts of 80kts

Re: For Those That Like Rough Weather

At the moment the wind is 50-60 knots. Our Capri is riding safely without problems but the water is being pushed into the Baltic by the storm so it is now over top of my pier.

I'm gonna have to go rescue my neighbors boat - they aren't home and in a few minutes the boat will be up on the pier

Force 10 forecast for Wednesday around here, but that's not unusual for this time of year.

I sailed over to Cowes today, single handed, and it was gusting to 40. But in the Solent, which is pretty sheltered, that's not a big deal. Just reef down and jog along.

It was a gorgeous winter day with altocumulus clouds and wan winter sunshine -- a perfect day for sailing.

On the way I passed the grounded car carrier Hoegh Osaka, listing at more than 45 degrees. The ship developed a list shortly after leaving Southampton -- apparently shifting cargo. The master ran her up onto the Bramble Bank rather than risk capsize.

Re: For Those That Like Rough Weather

Have you seen Captain Irving Johnson's movie (16mm converted) "Around Cape Horn"
Around Cape Horn (Mystic Seaport, 1985) (from original 16 mm footage shot by Irving Johnson, 1929)
I'm sure you can find a Torrent on it somewhere.

BTW: It's a matter of perspective, a number of years ago we sailed into Ensenada and anchored next to a homemade wooden sail boat.

In a local restaurant the owner told us his tale of woe, he was a carpenter and had built the boat from plans (24 footer). He (and his new girlfriend) set off from SoCal to summer down Baja with $1,000 US in cash. (now this was 30 years ago when that was worth something). Just north of Ensenada he ran into some wind, his centre board jammed in the trunk and he had problems with the tiller.
He was out of control and fighting for survival with his girl friend sitting below at the table.... only 4 foot headroom.
In the midst of this cacophony and struggle he heard a bang, bang bang.
Turning around he saw a wind surfer bouncing from wave to wave close enough to shout "this is great isn't it"
AS if that wasn't bad enough he had converted all his US$ to Peso's and the day we arrived the Mexican Government devalued the currency by something like 90% :-(
