Finally ran aground today.

It's taken 10 years or so, but today I finally ran aground. Not on mud or sand either. It was a hard grounding fair and square on a coral bommie. To top it off, I was doing something totally stupid at the time so let's just say karma got me!

Fortunately, it was just after low tide, and right on sunset. Kegdging and towing with the dinghy managed to get us off. Nearly sunk the dinghy in the process (chain and anchors are heavy!) Hopefully not too much damage, but no doubt some faring will be needed at next haulout.

Of course I've been copping a horrendous ribbing from the missus.

That is all!

Re: Finally ran aground today.

Welcome to the club, a club that many claim to not belong to - yet.
Sounds like yours was a lot more dramatic and involved than mine.
Good news to hear you got off, though.
But ..... shouldn't you have just fallen off since you are in the lower half of the globe?

Did your spade rudder fall off? How did the Rocna go in the kedging thing? Was Global Warming responsible or was it the inadequacy of the paper or electronic charts?
Enquiring minds want to know..

And here I was assuming your forum name meant running into reefs was your expertise. Learn something new everyday.

Glad to hear you and the boat survived

Fortunately, you didn't hit a coral head here, else wise there would have been investigators and fines, .....

Thank goodness for rising sea levels! And my damned plough anchor stuck us a second time when it jammed on the reef and we couldn't get it up, causing us to drift against another bommie. Fortunately the skeg protected the rudder, although it too crunched for a while. Hopefully the cast iron shoe absorbed the punishment.

And the chartplotter said I was outside the reef line. Grrrrr.

Many close calls, but the first time I gone went "crunch".

Re: Finally ran aground today.

I want to know what it was you were doing that was totally stupid. Without that detail the story is incomplete.
