Favorite wind speed?

What's your favorite wind speed for sailing?

Obviously the sea conditions can vary from open ocean to bay sailing... I'm more interested in open ocean.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

Running down wind in the trade winds - favorite speed 20 knots.
Beam reach offshore - 15 knots
Going to windward - Zero knots running one engine.

Enough to fill the sails...
Not so much that it rips the sails off the mast.

Well said, Stu.

For this boat, i"d add, up to 30 if it's ddw. It's still only about 20 apparent.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

Kind of like saying who is your favorite child, but since you asked:

1) playing around with my buddies in protected waters: 30-40 knots
2) best solo sail of my life in open ocean: 9 knots just aft of the beam
3) ultimate peace and tranquility: 5 knots, broad reach, flying the spinnaker, calm seas, slight fog.
4) best all around sailing (for my current boat): 12-15 knots.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

Upwind ~ 15kts, & seas under 1m-1.5m
AKA: Enough to be fully powered up @ hull speed, sans excessive heel, no reefing, no pounding. Lagnaippe!

Reaching ~ 20kts+ w. seas under 2.5m
AKA: Beyond hull speed, steering around the nasty bits, & mucho surfing. BIG Smiles!

Running ~ 15kts - 30kts
AKA: Mostly Surfing; on up to Full On Planing... FUN Defined!

Rum Drinkin ~ 8kts of breeze: Or 30kts+
AKA: 10 degrees of heel, 5kts of boat speed. Zero work involved.
AKA: Bar Taut (Spin) Sheets & Guys. Drysuit conditions: Lifelong Memorable Sailing

Re: Favorite wind speed?

10-20 from any direction. Over that the boat noises tend to drown out the acoustic guitar sounds. No need for reefing or keeping an eye on the spinnaker and boat speeds usually 6-8kt. Sweet spot, maybe 15. Some days sailing in 15 with pretty flat water I comment that I wish we could just sail right round the world like this..
Add no adverse current and blue skies and the occasional fish hookup and we're good to go!

7 gusting 12 knots. I like the acceleration with a puff, and I enjoy being able to set spinnakers and other light weather sails shorthanded with no stress.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

20 knots apparent

Sea state? Flat ( ie under 2 metres ) is my favourite.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

my boat only starts to sail at 20 kts. as long as wind is not on nose i am happy. chubascos happen, and those are fun to sail--gives me an advantage over you sloop sailing baysailors--pushes my ketch along at 8.4 kts. mine i got was 60+kts.. happy dance.....
sloops are a tad difficult to handle alone or even short handed in anything over 30 kts, i learned.
so i go out when you all come back in.
