Re: Favorite wind speed?

15-20 knots, 5 minutes after days of dead calm, blowing off a shore I'm close to, on a beam reach.

Hey, we can dream, can't we?

Re: Favorite wind speed?

On the A-Cat... Anything over 10 and under 22. At 10kn I can easily fly a hull and start trucking upwind, at 22kn I have to call it a day before the boat rips apart from the loads.

On the cruiser... Under 20 is more fun

On the tri... Anything over about 10

Re: Favorite wind speed?

Consistent 15 knots.

Likely because we hardly ever get this where we sail.

Lacking perfection, I will settle on whatever is served.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

Maximum hull speed with least amount of heeling and weather helm. Every boat is different.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

15 to 20 seems best for me and my boat unless I need to be at a destination directly upwind at a deadline. Most everything is OK, if I don't need to conform to a schedule!

I'm in luck,- I don't need to be anywhere. My best sailing has always been without a destination!

Re: Favorite wind speed?

10-15 knots. Unless it's DDW, then 15-20.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

Racing on a 300 lb Beachcat downwind with the spinnaker 15-20 knots is about perfect but you are working rather hard

On a Bristol 27, it's time to relax and enjoy a bit of speed.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

First time I ever got a vote, though I doubt very much that it counts.

Just a little more on my side of the bay than over by the boat I'm trying to pass.

Re: Favorite wind speed?

depends on the boat, but for my boat:

on my hinckely 38.
upwind: 10-12kts
reaching: 12-15 kts
downwind: 20ish.

on the schooners I spend a lot of time on for work:
15-20 on any point. big heavy wooden schooners need some proper breeze to be lively.

Time to get out of that overweight cat and sail a performance boat
