You replied to Lin Pardey's quote where she specifically used the word sail (5th word in your capture of the quote). Your reply brought up motor vessels and trawlers. The jist of my reply is how do you sail a trawler? Is someone who drives a trawler a sailor?

No dodging at all. Perhaps a round about way of asking for clarification, but no evasion.

I personally don't care if someone uses an engine or not. Everyone has their own comfort levels. As long as you feel confident in what you are doing and your equipment, motor, sail or row, it's up to you. There isn't a right or a wrong way to enjoy the water.

I don't think they wanted to be called steamers when battleships went from sail to steam. If they did change their name with the type of propulsion, what would they be called now? Nukers?

If you just want to play word games, the quote I was referring to said "learning to sail"...so how do you learn to sail on a fly bridge motor yacht because read in the literal sense it will somehow bring a better cruising experience.

I like having an engine in my sailboat that can cruise at 7 knots if I so feel like it. And I will run it and motor whenever I feel like it and don't care what others think of it.

I can't get to the dock so sit out on a mooring. But someone keeps tossing the pennant line off and I float away on the wind

Yep. When I first got the current boat with the diesel, wind genny, frig ... etc ... I posted a full, and somewhat sincere retraction of all that crap I'd uttered in the $500 cruising thread. I am now a full convert. Sailing is for sissies! Varooooom! Baby!

I'm not sure if I'm suppose to be all on the defensive now. I don't really motor all that much, which is why I have to get solar last year. But the solar did come with the bonus of keeping the beer cold.

Back on the topic and beyond the trivia for a moment?
I sailed 7 years without a motor - all thru the Bahamas and Caribbean - East and West sides. You learn to sail with the tides as far as entrances go - belize was easy with a 6 inch tide - I would simply take the hook out in the dinghy when I ran aground and wait for the change... I could have made Trinidad the hard way - sailing against a 3 knt current, or the easy way - Waiting for a rising tidal flow as I did... i was in Grenada in the 80's and ventured to Trini - simply planned ahead, and life is easy....
More boats have been lost depending on a motor than knowing we don't have one and planning for not having one! I must admit - I built the current boat with 130hp - and the first time it failed in the inter coastal - my kids were darn proud to have those sails uo and get to an anchorage like real sailors!
