I agree with you 100%--stopping the boat is the helmsman's job. I don't have a problem with that. The incident I was talking about was after I got the boat into the slip and stopped. There was a crosswind blowing the boat away from the finger pier and the dockhand just kept letting out line until the boat rubbed up against the pelican pole rather than pulling the boat in against her fenders.

This is the only time a dockhand at our marina did not do a good job of helping tie up the boat. Usually they know what they are doing.

BTW, we have a 250 slip marina.

DOCK HANDS!!!!!
It must only be in the States that you have dock hands, in the UK it is up to you and your crew 90% of the time when berthing, sometimes there are passers buy from other boats or possibly marina staff if they are not doing something else, who will offer to lend a hand, but we rely on skill , training and seamanship to berth our boats in all conditions and pride ourselves on these manouvers, because there will not always be someone to help you.
