Dinghy when Anchored in Hurricane ?

Last time I was anchored in a cyclone we had a roll-up dinghy and she was safe in a lazarette.

Now I have a rigid bottom dinghy and I don't know what to do with Lil' Dink in a storm when on the pick.

What do you do?

Mark

Attach a mooring ball to it and sink it until the storms over?

Last time I did a hurricane on anchor I deflated the dink and sank it.... BUT every other one I’ve been through that was of any consequence, I’ve run to the mangroves and made my boat look like a bug in a spiderweb..... then hauled ass to the land with the dink, drug it to as high of ground I could find... or loaded it in the truck and hauled butt for the mainland. Mind you, the one I did on the hook was Andrew, and the eye went within 12 miles of me.... scared the poop out of me, and I swore “NEVER AGAIN!"

Mark, After 12 hurricanes we pretty much have it down. We always fill it with water, not just pull the plug, and tie it off good out of the way. Chuck

Re: Dinghy when Anchored in Hurricane ?

Don't know if you have the room or not, but my hard dinghy sits on a teak cradle on the cabin top, with a canvas cover and secured with two good straps. I think a lot of other stuff would go before it would. Haven't exposed it to a cyclone though. I also have an Avon with a hard floor. The floor is a pain in the butt to install, but is removable and can store it under quarter berth and rest deflated in it's bag in a lazarette.

Re: Dinghy when Anchored in Hurricane ?

G'Day Mark,

That's a tough one! The safest thing for a RIB that you can't get below decks is to remove everything from it, pull the plug and fill it with water... except that this makes it pretty weighty, and if your boat is pitching wildly (as well it may) it will put big jerking loads on the painter. This may or may not lead to it ripping the attachment(s) off the hull, but it is a worry.

Then too, you just might need the dinghy to do something during the course of the storm... like abandon your home after it is holed by someone dragging down on you. Not a nice thought but it has happened.

So, I guess that it depends a lot on your specific circumstances. How protected an anchorage you are in, how bad the storm is expected to be in your area, how many other boats are about the scene... Bugger! I guess I don't really know the answer to your question.

Our 3.5 M RIB has sat out 50+ knot storms in normal trim: 15 hp o/b, fuel tank, anchor, oars etc. We use a double painter attached to both sides of the transom. It has stayed put so far (fingers crossed).

Hope that you don't need to find out the hard way, mate!

Cheers,

Jim

Mark J,

Just send your Rib and outboard to me, I promise to take good care of it. I will wash and clean it and pretend it is mine forever.

Re: Dinghy when Anchored in Hurricane ?

Hello Mark,

As I've done since venturing in the hurricane zone. I pump it up and pull the plug. Have been through half a dozen hurricanes and that has worked for me.

If your ever in the Cayman Islands I can find you dock space.

Cheers

Re: Dinghy when Anchored in Hurricane ?

We've ridden out a hurricane with our RIB flooded and tied alongside. It's still usable in a pinch, if you need to get off the big boat. We learned about flooding it halfway through the storm when a 90 knot gust flipped it on edge and plastered it to the side of the boat. I managed to right it and flood it, and had no problem for the rest of the storm.

These are all great ideas. I love CF. Any suggestions for a Boston Whaler? Hard to flood a self bailing boat.

No. It will go well to the north of us.

However it certainly started in the area I have my eye intensly on... Below 9 N.

If Grenada ever gets hit it comes from a system starting below 9N and heading W or WNW.

The dinghy question came as I was sitting out he back dangeling my toes and wondering what would happen if 60 knots hit the boat. Would a dink full of water drag the boat?

Jims and Play Actor's posts also have a point about keeping the dinghy accessable not only to help my own boat in an emergency, but also to help others in the anchorage.

I guess as many have said here, at least part fill the dinghy with water, put on a bridle and safety line, haul it close to the stern where its protected from the wind a bit.

How's the new boat going????????????????????????

Re: Dinghy when Anchored in Hurricane ?

mark--what you said about the dink immediately astern the boat is how i did my walker bay in sd when we had those nasty winter unnamed storms that should have been named...we got to 90+ kts most every year for past 4yrs and beyond-- was a mess. was vry very COLD there in those.
despite that , i am still a virgin as to suffering a hurrycame/named storm while on board(ida doesnt count)-- sailed thru 70+ and 60+ kt winds, but weren't named storms....
being at a dock(hate docks) is a different thing than sailing thru them, and i prefer the freedom of the seas and donot like the feel of having wind cross over me at a dock--docks are scary in and of themselves. as funky as it felt on a mooring, docks are much worse....
i hope the mayhem misses you and you have a safe season.

I like that approach as well, but fortunately the new Zanshin has a GARAGE

She arrives in Baltimore on the 25th of August, and I'll sail her down to the BVI in November. Are you going to be heading up-island again?
