This may sound like a silly suggestion, but it has merit. How I would defeat the sealed floatation compartments is another issue, however.

My approach is only marginally different than above. My hurricane plan is to anchor in a hole. I tie the dinghy (a Caribe L9 RIB) to both stern cleats using a bridle with independent legs (so in case one leg chafes through I don't lose the dinghy). In turn I hang a bucket off the back of the dinghy as a small sea anchor. Only if the wind starts to pipe up do I flood the dinghy. This approach assumes staying on board of course.

I've found the flooded dinghy reduces hunting of the boat at anchor which is a nice benefit.
