In fact I would bet he has quite enjoyed the attention and living this close to a bathroom and people to hang with is better than anything he has had in recent history. It has been stated, that Capt'n Jay has and still is a nussance in this comunity. What makes anyone think that he will not continue his same wreckless behavior after he has been rescued?
Sadly, I feel that the scenario you've described is the likeliest outcome.
I don't know the man personally, but I've heard enough about him and again, judging by his boat, your speculation about his personality and motivations are probably not far off the mark.

I can only attempt to answer your concluding question by saying that I maintain a small but real hope that the act of caring and taking the time to become involved with the man might lead to positive changes in his behavior.
It seems to me that in this day and age we are, most of us anyway, too willing to give up on people before even making an effort to impact their lives.
The only thing I'm certain of is that if I don't try, there is no way I can have a positive impact. So I'll try. Perhaps others will help me and teach the old guy how to anchor a boat properly. Perhaps he will meet someone in this process who will stop by and check on him periodically. Perhaps someone will help him construct a composting head so that he isn't fouling local waters.
I just like the idea of not giving up on people without trying to make a difference.
I understand fully that many of you feel that I'm naive. Trust me, I'm very much a realist. However I refuse to become a cynic just yet.

Furthermore, if Capt'n Jay really wanted to be rescued don't you think he would be preparing his boat for rescue? I believe he has been beached for several weeks, but still has junk all over and in the boat. wouldn't a man, even a horder be removing any and everything from it to make it as light as possible? Just my 2 cents.
I certainly agree with this as well. These efforts should have been underway from the moment the storm subsided.
I he were really interested in receiving help, I would have expected to have a message on my answering machine when I arrived at work this morning. I didn't.

The boat will be destroyed and hauled off. The city will cover the cost. With my taxes.
I doubt that anyone will profit from this. The donations will probably not amount to much.
He will lose his home, for what it's worth, and very likely will not be able to afford to find another. He very likely will have to turn to public assistance to get by.

So please, if anyone here knows him personally, would they please convey the message that I'm willing to organize an effort to get his boat afloat again and to help him get his act together afterward.
I've made two visits and have been unable so far to actually talk to the man.

I don't know if he knows how to anchor properly or not. I think it just as likely that his ground tackle, always in the water, hadn't been checked and/or he didn't have the money to replace chain and rode as needed. All that stuff costs money. All the lessons in the world would be of no help if his chain is eaten down to nothing and he doesn't have the money to replace it. At $800 a month I can't imagine that he would.

Re: Cruisers yacht stuck on Gulfport beach in 4 feet of sand

How do we know what his income is or what resources he has, honestly, if I only had an $800.00/month income, and I lived on a sailboat, my bigest expendacures would be ground tackle, right behind food. If I wasn't completly disabled I would have some sort of a JOB to get the proper ropes anchors and such to protect my house. From the film I saw he did not apear disabled, and could move his mouth quite easly.

Just my 2¢
This is just the reason to help and knothead is a great man for it...
I read at one point capt jay had a broken back...i bet he needs some help getting that washing machine and the gennies off the boat
Maybe his health is not so good
I read that people that knew him said he was a good man and would always help others with their boats.....i don't think he said..."Wait...first i must look over your boat to see if you deserve my help....and although he could have probably used the money...thats not the reason he helped....so....come on karma...where are you?

Maybe there's more than one way to help him, and maybe getting his boat afloat again isn't the best way to help him.

*Maybe* what this man wants and what both he and the community need are not the same thing. No matter how well his boat is secured once he's free, he has to be able to keep it secure. He has to replace worn rode and degraded chain as needed. That stuff isn't cheap.

I'm going to remind people again that Debby wasn't that much of a storm here. We have every reason to expect worse in the future.

Re: Cruisers yacht stuck on Gulfport beach in 4 feet of sand

He or someone helped him get that gen set on the boat as well as the washing machine, I have heard no cries for help getting the boat preped to rescue it. This is something that anyone can do and I am sure that anyone would do if they had the permition from Capt'n Jay to do it. Where is the compation for the dog that is living in filth?

Re: Cruisers yacht stuck on Gulfport beach in 4 feet of sand

While everyone has a right in this country to do what they want (within reason) they may not have the means. Owning and living on a 45' sailboat is an expensive proposition, sure it can be done for next to nothing for a few years, but when it comes time to perform maintenance on the few basic systems needed to keep it afloat and in one spot there is no way to do it without hard work or money (or a combination of the two). Putting someone back out on the water that doesn't have the means or desire, whatever it may be, to be responsible for keeping a relatively expensive apartment out of harms way is a bad idea.

I have all the compassion in the world for the dog' s living conditions....as working with animals is my chosen profession and have been a volunteer for Ears...emergency animal rescue service...now red rover for years....the point i was making was simply what knothead said......if you can help make a positive change in someones life...its a good thing

Because you haven't heard about it, no one will be willing? They've tried to get the boat off. It hasn't worked. The fire department is not going to come out and blow a big hole in the bottom of a shallow beach to get his boat off, endangering children who play in the water. Since it isn't a full keel boat, bringing a power boat up to blow around the sand isn't likely to get it out either, but it will also make those waters dangerous afterwards for small children. The city is not going to allow that.

I am astounded to *still* be reading imagined claims that the locals have no compassion for this man. My email was awash with people offering to help and looking for people to join them. That's one way I knew numerous people were trying to help him even though I was out of town.

The only thing we know about the dog is that he poops. Dogs don't care if there's poop around. Most people do, but dogs don't. That's why we have to work hard to housebreak puppies. For all we know, the dog is quite happy with his owner.

Either his next disability check has come, or someone has helped him out financially. The question to me remains "How will he maintain sound anchorage over time if his boat is somehow moved out again?"

Small correction, however. It's not the Gulfport Municipal Pier immediately threatened if his boat breaks free from the beach in a storm. It's the pier attached to the "Casino," a local venue for events. Once he goes back out there, all sorts of things are at risk, including other boats that might not survive being hit by a loose 45' boat in a storm.

There were several extremely high tides with that storm. People used that fact to get a 44' off not just a grounding but a grounding on rocks in Gulfport. That boat also would have been slated for salvage by the city of Gulfport if the boat hadn't been gotten off.

Re: Cruisers yacht stuck on Gulfport beach in 4 feet of sand

Seems to be another hapless chap Like Michael Calabrese RIP.

Do these coastal cities routinely play tough guy the unfortunate?

Because he looks like a bum?

Because his boat doesn't look like a Million dollar yacht?

How does one boat sitting on the beach ruin a city's Labor Day?

So.. no compassion for this guy either?

His boat doesn't seem to be very far from the drop off in the sand going by the photos.

Why's can't a big boat pull his masts over at high tide? Err slowly as the sand yields?

Goldiphlox you sound very sweet indeed, with all the best intentions in the world and I think you are a great lover of everything that moves, but maybe a little nieve. Sometimes helping others that either do not ask for it or desirve it, can be the worst thing that you can do for them. Somertimes tough love is needed, I would just like to know before I dedicate time, money, resorces to a person, that they are likely to learn and develop from it. There are lost causes, and there are people that make a living from lost causes. Anyone can be a victim, but taking advantage of peoples kindness IMHO is worse than anything.
