re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Expect a decision to be made within 10 days or so about what to do with the Costa Concordia.

1) Pump out 17 full tanks of fuel oil
2) Patch all holes
3) Pump all water from inside & Re-float ship
4) Tug boat it to a scrap yard
5) Cut her up for scrap

I think the most likely thing is that she will be scrapped.
I think it will just be too psychologically demanding on anybody to expect them to go on this ship in which many had died. That's another reason I think it might well end up being scrapped."

People die in hospitals all the time, and they don't get scrapped.

Very true, indeed - just the thought of cruising on her is sending shivers down my spine. But what a shame.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Good luck with parbuckling. That graphic shows how it works but shows it on a flat bottom. Given that the hull is laying just about on its side on a rock slope, putting cables under will be difficult. Normally cables are put under using water jets to tunnel through mud or sand, but this is rock. And getting airbags under her is going to be a real pain, again because shes almost flat on the slope. Pulling on the off side will also tend to help her slip. Consider also the aerial view of the ship and shore. In order to parbuckle they will need to build a solid base for the winches to sit on which means a fairly large engineering job in itself.

One more thing to consider is the light weight construction of the ship. Someone mentioned WWII Pearl Harbor salvage in an earlier post. Consider that they were salvaging warships with heavy plate and armor. Tying in the lift points to the structure won't be easy because of its light construction. You can see how badly the port side is crushing just from the weight of the ship. And as I mentioned earlier, closing off all those monster windows and balcony doors is going to be even more fun. There is no room to work outside the ship, so putting patches on from outside is out for a goodly amount of side. They may try to pour concrete into the cabins, but that will add weight in the worst possible place.

I am looking forward to seeing how this job gets done. I would not be surprised if she is carted off in chunks on site. Giglio will make a fortune housing and entertaining the crews used to chop her to pieces. Sometimes they just can't be refloated.

In fact these boats are stable. It would be interesting to speculate would she have listed anymore had she not hit the bottom. I saw a video of another cruise ship being tank tested showing that it de eloped a 15 degree list almost immediately but then did not list anymore. Grounding the Concordia on a sloping rock ledge may not have been a good idea. ( from a captain who seems not to have many good ideas,!)

Article outlining the salvage problems. Check the photos below, there are a couple of peeled off hull skin sitting on the rocks where she scrapped past.

The problem is that the ships owners have not given the green light to that salvage crew yet. They must be waiting for the insurance to give them the green light.
The salvage will be 1/2 the ships value, so thats $225 million for salvage. Not a fast
decision when that much money is at stake
I am not sure that I understand the cable arrangement in the diagram in post 598. I was not able to attach it here.

The red line appears to run from shore to the port side of Concordia. I assume that both ends are secured.

The black line appears to be fixed to anchors off the port side of Concordia and the text advises they run around the hull, and then to the crane. If so, it seems like the line to the anchors should run under the hull instead of over it for the ship to be righted by the crane pulling in the black cable. Is that correct? If not, what happens as the crane retrieves the line?

Looking at the latest pictures she's slipped quite a bit already.

Yea I understand what your saying but I have noticed that rescue operations have been stopped a few times due to the ship slipping and thought if they could have secured it to shore the rescue could have gone on without stoping and made I safer for the crews. Which is something that's time is essential where as salvage if it's delayed a few day no one dies

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

St. Elsewhere,

The idea with the port and starboard anchors is to tie the ship to just that location and just roll the ship in place. If she were to roll to starboard she would slip off the cliff pocket she is in now into deep 200 foot deep water which would make salvage very problematic and even more expensive.

I guess passengers will snap up that bargain...
