I don't know if anyone else noticed but in the infrared vid you can see at least smoke coming out of one stack and that had been awhile since impact and grounding so they must of had some power and gensets running even with the list

Charming. I'm no prude or teetotaller, but sailing really cut into my drinking, because drinking really cuts into your situational awareness. So I save it for the period following hooking up shore power and setting two springs.

One wonders if the Captain's dinner included the customary litre of vino. Was this guy a sober showoff, or was there aiding and abetting by one of Italy's better known exports? While it's perfectly possible to wreck a ship with zero alcohol involved, one wonders also if it was.

The Guardian's web site reports fuel removal is about to start, and that Italy's civil protection agency is assuming control of activities:

"On the island of Giglio, the head of Italy's civil protection agency Franco Gabrielli arrived on Saturday to take over the search for passengers left on board the listed vessel after mounting concern over the duplication of efforts – and the conflicting information given out by – the various police, military and emergency services who have been involved.
Gabrielli may decide that salvage teams can now start working on removing fuel from the vessel even as the search for passengers continues, suggesting that the Dutch salvage workers waiting on Giglio could have been sent into action days ago.
Fears are growing that the ship could slip into deeper waters, even though the predicted arrival of bad weather that could disturb the Costa Concordia is now thought to be further off."

It must be a very difficult task to secure tankers or barges near the ship with the rocky sloping sea bed, and to have hoses and lines connected to a 1000 foot ship that is currently unstable. It is even more surprising is that "Gabrielli may decide that salvage teams can now start working on removing fuel from the vessel even as the search for passengers continues."

Is it not possible to anchor the ship to shore some how to prevent it from sliding down further and make it safer for everyone involved with rescue / salvage.

yes,I'm getting pretty wild sending a valiant stoker forward to start the bowprop!They had plenty of lights going here in a picture posted here http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ost860401...so I expect bridge controls functioned somewhat.

The whole thing is pretty terrible.Anyone below would be in a nasty place dealing with stairwells and hatches and all the rest...

According to the spokesman of Bos-Kalis (owner of Smit-Tak Salvage) there is nothing to hold this ship of 100.000 plus Grts when gliding down the slope.
Do not forget that this ship is twice the weight of the largest WWII battleship!

Yea I wouldn't expect it to hold total weight of the ship but to add some stability and possibly time to the operations. With the ship siting on the bottom that's where all the weight is being taken so shore anchors don't need to be able to take the full weight of the ship

Yes they can anchor the ship to shore to prevent it from slipping farther into the sea. They had talked about that a few days ago.
The problem is that the ships owners have not given the green light to that salvage crew yet. They must be waiting for the insurance to give them the green light.
The salvage will be 1/2 the ships value, so thats $225 million for salvage. Not a fast
decision when that much money is at stake

But that's different. Those boats are very stable, and the guests don't have to step carefully around the shrouds to keep from being bumped into the water between the dock and the boat ... for instance.
