Ref post #299...........There is no indication that it was the same captain (I would doubt that seriously). The ship is not in control in a docking situation, the captain, pilot, tugs , wind and current are.

They will rename and lease or sell it to someone else. Been done many many times... Exxon Valdez is sailing... but not under that name.

The wreck of Concordia is still moving from time to time. To get the fueloil out will be another couple of days.
One will blast e number of holes in the hull to give access to the bunkers. The biggest obstacle for the divers is the tremendous amount of derbris.

I have admiration for Commander Di Falco who gave the Captain of Concordia such a square riggered dressing down .....

FWIW the Exxon Valdez was I believe scrapped in 2009 in Alang, India as no longer being legally allowed to trade due to her being single hulled. Post Alaska she traded for many years under the name Exxon Mediterranean without any problems. It was never the ship's fault merely the drivers.

The Concordia I would guess is likely to be a Total Constructive Loss, and the longer she lays on her side the more chance. Even if salvaged and repaired it would be difficult to hide the fact of what she has experienced. All these internet sources of the 'truth' would have it spread around in no time!

Again not the ship's fault but purely the actions of primarily one man, and possibly his supporting team. I'd also look hard at the corporate attitude of Costa's / Carnival (the ultimate owners) as apparently they have already said that if any passenger wants compensation they'll need to sue for it which seems a bit harsh.

I think it is very different than a renamed merchant ship that carries cargo. Yes, I know about the Valdez which in 1990 was renamed the Exxon Mediterranean. When Exxon spun off its tanker fleet in order to reduce liability, it became the S/R (SeaRiver Maritime) Mediterranean. In 2008 it was converted into an ore carrier which was named the Dong Fang and then in 2011 renamed the Oriental Nicety.

Nobody really pays to cruise on a merchant ship, at least not like back in the old days where many of them did take up to 12 paying passengers. I think it would be very difficult if not impossible to hide the reputation of the Costa Concordia simply by changing its name. Perhaps work as an ore carrier is its destiny? ...just kidding. (unsuitable hull, obviously)

Doesn't the name Carnival seems to be very descriptive of the attitude and the atmosphere on the bridge? The image in my head is that of people juggling in the uniform of the day, clown suits.

That may be, but it is hardly sales promotion. In any way, Costa is finished, the major agents will turn their business to better suited companies.
It shows the ultimate carelessness of General management, even indifference.

I'm SURE lawsuits are being prepared right now...there is going to be a flood of them.

With the no cure no pay arrangements and the fantasmagoria claims that judges rule it is for sure that many lawslingers for hire jump the boat.
Carnival might be capable to fight off any claims in the VS but if Costa will manage to counter a more than possible bankruptcy is the open question as insurers will not pay out due to captains incompetence.
