re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

They have to get that rock out of there first. And that's going to be one hellofa patch. I have some left over fiberglass.

There is a huge dry dock in Freeport that can pick it.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

If we sit in our caves and don't venture out, not much will happen to us, none of this is a reflection on cruise boats in general it will be a reflection on whatever comes of the enquiry!

Lives were lost this is serious stuff, people relied on correct and proper behaviour but sadly for them there will prove to be a comedy of errors that led up to the ultimate un-evitable conlusion.

Me? i'm happy to go on a cruise boat (of my choice) i drive cars still, yet i've lost friends in accidents, i fly in planes yet i've lost mates in crashes. I venture from the cave because i want to experience life it's just so sad these people were let down by circumstance!

They must have been terrified.

I have never been exposed to salvage, so can someone fill in the gaps? I thought salvage operations mean that 50% of what is salvaged become the amount paid to the salvage company.

Smit-Tak from Rotterdam is on the spot and make preparations to pump the fueloil out.
Fortunately there is hardly any spill, they are in good time.

How they will get her off, is a problem left to the salvagers .....

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

In this situation it is purely a contract between contractor and salvage company, the ship is in a known position with a purely engineering solution. NOT like being adrift etc...

In a case like this, the salvage company may well enter a day rate contract with the ships owners/insurers.
Pure salvage with a Lloyds Open Form agreement is quite rare now, and in those cases, the award to the salvors is decided by an Admiralty Court, which will base the award on the value of the vessel, cargo (which includes talking cargo), outlay of the salvor, degree of danger, actions taken to minimise pollution etc.
All I know for certain, that having worked as skipper on Smit Tak salvage tugs, the tugs crew will see little, if any at all, of the salvage award

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

There are still people locked up in the half sunken vessel. Salvager's have located a couple and a single person. They are still in the hull.
Part of the Dutch passengers arrived yesterday but more than a few lines have not been published.

It should be clear that those companies playing around in the cruising world should consider a more professional approach when it comes to crewing a boat. That to start with.
The development and design of future vessels should be concentrated on safety rather than abundant overdressing interior and leisure rooms.
Monsterships like Allure of the Seas can be missed as toothache. In case of a calamity there is no way to go for passengers and crew. That has been proven as a real factor to count with.

If the below is accurate, then explains why it hit a rock......it's not as if the everything marked on a chart has all been measured to the nearest inch, especially the underwater stuff.

After looking at the location in iNavx on my iPad I really have to wonder what the captain was thinking

La nave Concordia vicino al Giglio - Video - Corriere TV

I was only half joking on my second post to this thread when I said "Maybe give passengers a closer view of the shore side lights???" post # 33. Well it appears that the Costa Cruise Line buzzes that island on a regular basis looking at the above posted video.

I think we can safely day that the route taken was not intentional. Why it happened. Remains to be seen.

In the flying world we say there are BOLD Pilots and there are OLD Pilots but there aren't any BOLD OLD Pilots... maybe the same can be said for Cruise Ship Captains....
