It transpires most of what was " reported" in the media has been wrong, inaccurate or just fabricated. Let's wait for the official accident report. It's easy to demonise the captain based on such " news" media reports. Undoubtably he will carry the can and pay a high price, but I don't think all the blame lies on one person.

The lady was reported to be Mongolian , I thought !!!

Demonizing the Captain without evidence?

The evidence just arrived.

The linked article quotes Capt. Schettino as saying, "I went up to the bridge. I ordered the navigation to be manual, and I didn't have the command. The navigation was being directed by another officer,".

This apparent contradiction may be from translational differences in meaning of words between Italian and English. In the US Navy for sure and I would suspect in most other shipboard environments, the Captain of a ship is always in command whether or not he is actively directing the navigation (i.e. course and speed) of the ship. "Having the conn" is the term applied to the person actually issuing orders to the helm. Perhaps there is no equivalent terminology in Italian.

The sequence of events on the bridge described in this article does not support Schittino's claim that everyone there "blacked out". It sounds to me like he had a major brain fart instead.

Don't know if anyone else has found this one.
Apparently, the evidence is going to sink the Captain.

Edit: Sorry, the last few thread updates came to me by phone, and doesn't let me access the links, so I am posting old news. Mea culpa everyone!

I have a 40 foot sailboat. I would be paranoid in water with jutting rock. He takes an 800 footer close to showoff to people on the beach and runs it aground. Pardon me but, how do these people ( I'm talking about Peacocks ) get jobs? He must have had some intelligence to pass the captains courses. It's just flabbergasting to me. Yes, I know 20/20 hindsight and all that. I can see someone accidently running aground, but it appears this guy was just playing chicken with nature. The cruise company should lose it's license just for hiring the boob.

if you look at previous passes by others captains, this was not an unusual event, in his case he just cut it a little too fine. In my view the company knew and approved these "flybys" many cruise companies do to to give passengers and shore side residents the buzz of passing "close" to islands etc.

while this captain undoutably didn't shower himself in praise!!, I don't think the actions were unusual.

Where do you find previous passes?

Now that is good to know. I am much more informed because of it. Thank you so much.

I lost signal was that snide remark helpful. I can't find the article nor do I care too. The costa made a similar pass as have others. Go back and read all the articles. This time they cut it to close. They made a similar pass months earlier.

Yes, it was established long ago that these "fly byes" by Costa ships, while not official, are not unusual. There's links to YT vids of them. This time they rolled the dice and got snake eyes.

Here is a major milestone in the salvage operation . . . .
Name: COSTA CONCORDIA Costa Concordia - Type of ship: Passenger ship - Callsign: IBHD - vesseltracker.com
IMO: 9320544
Time: 11-08-2012 14:08:16 UTC

NEWS:
The platform "Microperi" with a length of 120 metres was positioned alongside the port side of the "Costa Concordia". The platform will serve as a base for drilling the holes for the 30-m-piles which are to bear the underwater platform which will be used to support the wreck once it is upright. The wreck may finally taken to Livorno when salvaged.
