Don't see why not and you could then sit on it as it would be a lot more comfortable than the average cattle class seat.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

More stories from the captain below. Any thoughts on who he, as captain, might refer to as "the manager"?

More leaks from the investigation into Schettino emerged on Tuesday, with a recording of a phone conversation the day after the disaster in which he is heard recounting the tragedy to his interlocutor.
"When I understood that the ship was listing, I upped and left," he says at one point -- an apparent contradiction to a statement to prosecutors last week in which he said he fell on to a lifeboat and could not get back on board.
Schettino also pins the blame on unnamed others for the manoeuvre, saying: "It was the advice of the manager: 'Go that way, go that way'."
"They pissed me off with their 'Pass through there, pass through there'."
"The rocks were there, but the instruments I had weren't showing them, so I went through," he added. "So, here we are and it's me who's paying for everything."

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

CNN has a similar transcript here:
Cruise ship captain admits 'mistake' in deposition - CNN.com
but they have it as managers and that would be the company.Elsewhere on CNN (oops-it's on your link, At Sea) they say the 1st mate is also to be charged, -if so that sums as the Captain, the 1st and 2nd officers all looking very bad in this....oh, and of course the head-waiter!

edit. looking around on CNN I found at last one eyewitness account (from a married couple watching a magic show) that actually has an entire timeline from first strike onward. The first strike was felt as a "shudder"

Not entirely surprised that the impact with the rocks was felt as a shudder. The sheer mass of big ships absorbs quite a bit of the impact energy. Given that the collision was more of a raking blow instead of a head on into the rocks, one would really not expect anything particularly dramatic. Even Titanic, at a little over half the weight, transmitted little more than a slight shudder to most passengers and crew as she scraped along iceberg's submerged mass.

The instruments he had weren't showing the rocks.
Darn, don't you hate it when the rock-o-meter isn't working?

"Captain, portside lateral rockometer display is on the fritz again."
"Very well, fix it right after the VDR."

Regardless of a rock outcropping, it was foolish to come that close to a shoreline at that speed.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

References to Concordia's sonar have appeared in the press, and the captain's reference to a rock detecting a instrument made me think that Concordia may have been equipped with side scan sonar. They are an effective rock detector.

Schettino may have been referring to a Electronic Charts Display and Information System (ECDIS) in this regard. I understand that it displays depths, but I do not know if it warns of shallows near the ship vs. sounder data. It may alarm based on charted depth below some limit.

...yes,interpreting Schettino's unguarded comments (and all the other comments too), as having a kernel of truth, is the only way to detail a speculation.
Too bad that the translations from Italian make it fuzzier for non-speakers.

Perhaps the biggest factor in what has occurred is rats jumping off the sinking ship because this created questions that the public refused to wait for answers. We all make mistakes, granted his had greater consequents than most of ours. The result was that Schettion has had him self branded as a coward who refuses to take responsibility for his action and a man? who's word can not be trusted.

If it wasn't for the tragic loss of life ... this has all of the hallmarks of the Gilbert & Sullivan opera.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

I asked the editors of Giglio News if they could learn the status of the VDR. Here is a Google Translate interpretation of their reply:
Good evening,
Voyage Data Recorder is in possession of the judiciary and fully functional.
Will be analyzed during the incident evidence.

All the best, the editors GiglioNews

The investigators will have lots of detailed information regarding who did what, when they did it, status of systems, and details of the watertight compartments. Eventually an interesting and complete report will be published.
