re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Here is a link to the AIS track of the ship. Apparently they hit an uncharted rock and the captain beached it, otherwise it would have sunk.

The Louis Sea Diamond was blamed on captain initially too.. then later a new survey was done and found that the Greek Navy maps were incorrect and a marked rock was about 100 meters farther from shore than it was supposed to be, and at a depth of just a few meters instead of 20 or so....

That's why it's called "Navigation" not "follow the dotted line".

A tad off topic I was surprised to see the crew to guest ratio of 1 to 3. Is that normal? Otherwise hope they account for the missing.

I had expected better than that from gCaptain, definitely not based on facts.

Here is probably the best background summary - yet. SeaNews Turkey - Costa Concordia: A major navigational error, or what?.

There is a a lot of explaining to do.
Quote:
However, in a distance 7-8 nautical miles from the Channel between the island and the mainland of Italy, the ship made a course alteration, up to 20 degrees by turning the course to port side, so to speak, heading right onto Giglio Island.
What was the reason, or cause, for this change of course?

I'm not a big boat captain, but I have to wonder... Why don't these big boats have a commercial equivalent of a fish finder that could help spot such items? Seeing the pictures of the gash, it was no small object... the Sea Diamonds puncture was tiny compared to this massive gash.

What about "stupidity"?

They have a bad track record, thos Costa' s with ships as well as crew-wise.

You can't fix stupid. Millions of politicians and bureaucrats prove that worldwide every day.

WSJ says around 70 still unaccounted for. That's a scary number. Hope they are found out safe and sound.

C'mon guys,

Why bother wasting breath with speculation and I'm with others as I shake my head at the cynics. IMHO they should all put on pointy D hats and sit out this thread in the classroom corner.

Fortunately maritime accidents get well investigated so the cause will come out.

In the meantime. let's not forget this is a open forum and could be read by familites still grieving. Maybe worth giving the sarky comments a rest, eh.

@ Swagman

I think the seriousness of this terrible happening is well understood. If Costa did not have such a bad rep, one could have thought of an unfortunate happening. However, that is not the case.

MacG,

Your a wise old guy and you already know the reason. Cruise ships are designed to have minimum righting (stability) because a lot of stability would make the average passenger seasick. They want the slow roll of lower stability.

Wow she must have been doing a pretty good clip for that rock to do that kind of damage and be stuck in the hull.

Has anyone seen an estimate of the speed they were going when it hit?
