re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Prosecutor Francesco Verusio has confirmed reports that prosecutors are investigating allegations that liner's captain, Francesco Schettino, abandoned the stricken liner before all the passengers had escaped.

Asked Sunday by Sky TG24 about the accusations, Grosseto prosecutor Francesco Verusio replied, "unfortunately, I must confirm that circumstance."

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Perhaps it's been mentioned before (so many posts) but on this site
GeoGarage it shows AIS video and an image showing boat heading North and hit on port side

Why then, do all the images show it facing South and, the damage on the port (high) side away from land?

Has it hit and then swung around 180 degrees?

More info/ speculation here as well where they suggest squatting ( Bernoulli's principle)

Costa Concordia sank near Italy (AIS data replay video) | Cruise Articles

Looks like there's a gap in ais positions between 20.37 and 20.53.

And why the turn to port at 20.22?

We know nothing
In the second link, it looks like he might have turned to port to avoid overrunning that other boat in front of him (20:22), then forgot to change back to original course until the last second (too late).

It's now being reported on several media sites that say the boat hit the outer section of la scole. The formation close to shore and south of the port. They claim the ship came close to " salute" the town..

Then after the impact the captain tried to run her aground near the port using the anchors to turn her , his intention seemingly to ensure she settled into shallow water. That's why she's facing south.

I simply can't beleive anyone took a ship of that size knowingly that close to a well charted obstruction. If that turns out to be the case the captain and the whole bridge team should be locked up for a long time. That's not manslaughter that's a premeditated act.

It doesn't, it just shows that she didn't go through "Le Scole", which other than the Gemitrack picture (which has not been varified anywhere) there is no other information to suggest she did.....

I think there must be a bit of artistic license on the parts of the journo's etc when they sketch these tracks out. What if they made a turn to starboard when close to abeam of Cala del Lazzaretto and swung the stern into the isolated rock close to the head land.
Can't see any one making a deliberate turn to port that close in to the hard stuff

The VDR hopefully will provide the answers, or some of them. But, did the OOW remember to push the tit on the VDR bridge unit.
Our VDR has a limited hard drive capacity, and various stuff gets overwritten. In the event of an incident, someone on the bridge should press a button which writes the data to a separate drive, thats if they want that data to be preserved.

If the below is accurate, then explains why it hit a rock......it's not as if the everything marked on a chart has all been measured to the nearest inch, especially the underwater stuff.

One thing for sure, once the law is done with the Captain, he won't get a job in charge of a rubber duck in a bath tub. His career is history.
