I would like to feel cautiously optimistic that they have learned their lessons, and take this seriously. Perhaps they got more from the world than they earned or deserved, but I suppose that I have as well. For my part: Good luck to the good ship Lagniappe II, and crew.

Re: Couple who sank off FL got a new boat

One of the drivers on an Uber trip I was on a few weeks ago knows this couple. From his comments this should be entertaining at least...

"1985 Cheoy Lee Pedrick 36-foot"
...

"Walsh says the crew, which now includes Broadwell’s father, an experienced sailor, as well as his sister, another friend who lives aboard a sailboat, and three dogs total,"

I make that 5 people and 3 dogs on a 36 footer. That's going to get crowded

Re: Couple who sank off FL got a new boat

So let me get this straight...

The 36' Cheoy Lee was given to them by the former owner who "felt sorry" for them? (OK, they paid $1 to make it legal) and they made $16,000 from their Go Beg Me account from suckers?? W.T.F.???

Their is a really nice couple across the dock from me here in Mexico who have been working their asses off on their Cheoy Lee 7 days a week for 2 years now getting her ready to go. All their own money. (made by WORKING FOR IT!) No "Beg Me" account. No YouTube T&A nonsense. Just real, stand up, non-stupid, non-snowflake people that are doing it on their own.

And these 2 numbnuts get a do over for free and then some. What a crock of crap.

Yes Virginia, it is a brand new snowflake world.

I recall that they did pay to have the original boat removed, albeit at a reduced price. I think the salvage company gave them a half price quote of somewhere around $5,000. At least they did the right thing and had it removed. They certainly did come out ahead though. Hopefully they are settled and working now.

They do seem to have learned their lesson about being prepared, having insurance, and learning to sail.

I think it's great that they are giving it another try.

Many would have quit simply because they ran aground and broke their boat

Re: Couple who sank off FL got a new boat

I say more power to them. They learned a hard lesson about nighttime approaches; but before the snide remarks go too far, let's be clear about something: When they wrecked, the markers at John's Pass had been moved by Irma, and the channel as marked was shoaled over. Following the markers even in the daytime with anything more than a 3 foot draft would put you on a sand bar. I know because I'm a "local." John's Pass is presently being dredged to restore a usable channel that is true to the markers. And if the world was kind to this young couple, why begrudge them that? Why not be happy that the world is that kind a place?
