Carnival Cruise Liner Crushes Marina In Its Wake

Can you imagine you think you are safely berthed in a marina, and then the prop wash from a giant cruise ship destroys your boat? Carnival is lucky there were no people injured or killed in this incidence in Italy, but I suspect some lawsuits may be pending if they don't settle quickly and generously.

Not sure what the captain's role in this is or perhaps the pilot's. Something tells me I don't really want to be either right now.

Azimut Pods pointed straight at the little marina. Probably 15,000 hp, enough to collapse the floating docks anyways.
Pilot and Captain in trouble, but they sacrificed the marina to save the ship from hitting something or running aground.

I was imagining what the captain/pilot must have been feeling like as they saw it unfolding.

I felt sick just watching it myself.

No horn to warn the folks in the marina? If I were on board taking a nap I would be dead.

I wonder under what conditions are the captain permitted to request the services of tugs - or is that CCL company bean counter controlled.

I bet he was thinking "Sweet baby Jesus, please don't let me hit that shoal. More power!" As the Costa Concordia flashed through his brain.

Some crushed plastic boats a small sacrifice, from his point of view.

I guess the sinking of the pilot launch was some kind of poetic justice.

I believe the master of the cruise ship is yachtsman who has had one too many tranquil days on the water stuffed up by powerboats kicking up huge wakes in 'no wake' zones.

Karma at work....

Do I detect a love/hate relationship with pilots?

Wow! We have been tossed about the anchorage in St Thomas by Cruise ship prop wash in a similar fashion, such that we collided with the boat upwind of us. Fortunately, damage was minor to both boats.

Chump change compared to having the cruiseship run aground or collide with the docks.

Re: Carnival Cruise Liner Crushes Marina In Its Wake

Cruise liners do not want to pay for a pilot so this is what you get. Warwick Tompkins got his beautiful schooner crushed by a liner on the west coast years ago. Dumb captain refused a pilot and got caught in the currents. Ounce of prevention....
