it is a pain to find a good manual windless for a larger boat now. You can still find the small ones, but larger ones are getting harder to find.

Depends on what you're hauling up, doesn't it? Old boat -- 100 feet of 1/4" chain, 40 pound Spade, mechanical windlass = fine. New boat -- 100 meters (320 feet?) of 1/2" chain (half a ton's worth), 121 pound Rocna, mechanical windless = totally impossible.

I wouldn't have minded an electric windlass on the old boat but she didn't come with one and I never felt the need to add one. In the new boat, some fault in the electrical windlass would be a serious problem. It's a total necessity, objectively.

A depth sounder and a VHF? that were luxury

We always had those---depth sounder= something heavy attached to a line that you threw overboard--preferably something knapped out of VHF--very heavy flint.
