Funnily enough been a little bit about military leadership on the news over here recently - apparently a captain of a US navy ship (aircraft carrier?) has been using his crew to make gay porn movies for the last 5 (?) years and then selling them around the Navy.

Haven't been following the story closely, but that doesn't seem to be regarded as an illegal order.

I guess the moral (?) is to read the terms & conditions of "service" as crew very carefully - some Captains can have strange ideas..........

We had CCTV on board both ships I was on, but, luckily, Capt Honors wasn't our XO -- this was the gator navy anyway, just helicopters, no fighter jocks.

However, our floats were always 6 months on station -- think they're still the same length in Iraq and Afghanistan today -- so we'd do a turnover in Rota Spain. One of our warrant officers, and intel guy, took a camcorder to the turnover party at the O club, and played it for us in the JIC -- I wasn't an officer and wasn't invited. ;-)

This was still a few years before the tailhook scandal in Las Vegas, but let me tell you, tailhook was tame compared to what these guys were doing. And yes, the Admiral was there too, it was all out in the open. I guess their favorite part was sumo wrestling in their underware -- in front of the young spanish waitresses. Had we as enlisted men done any of that stuff, we'd have spent the rest of the cruise in the brig.

But the guys we were relieving had spent several months in Beirut -- this was a year or two after the barracks bombings -- so I'm not going to find too much fault, but even then, I thought it was a bit childish.

As an NCO in the US Navy I had three main jobs. Run the ship (in my case, weapons systems), babysit and grow my subordinates, and most importantly make the LT and Lt Cdr look good.
In the Navy most of the leadership didn't come from Officer country but from the Chief's mess and other NCO's.

I kind of miss it actually.

I suggest you find a good, well raced boat and join as crew. It has to be a place where there is no shouting required for things to go right. This will be a cohesive team. I had the pleasure to sail with such a group for 18 years on Lake Erie and we took home a lot of flags and relish trays. Its been 15 years since we sailed together but I would trust any of these men or women on/with my boat. We are still in touch and continue to get together.

Just remember... Being in charge is like being a pretty girl, if you have to tell people you're in charge then you're not.

'leadership' can not be taught or learned, directly...

experience and confidence and ability to communicate are all parts and parcels of leadership. If you are confident in your skillz and are expereinced in everything you are expecting form others, and if you can communicate your expectations and desires effectively, then you will be a good leader...

there are a lot of good leaders and captains but I would want to be a great leader... one that is admired and emulated...but, i know I cant and wont be...

I am proud and happy to say that i ahve led and accomplished a lot of things, but like others before me, in my career, I never wanted to be like any of them... just better then them... and i think i was, a little anyways.

good luck in your aspirations..
