Pretty cool. But I'll bet that wasn't his first time.

Re: Anyone else think this guy could dock anything anyhwere?

I don't question he's good but if you let me do it half a dozen times a day, I could probably get the hang of it to.

Looking at the thrust, it looks like he has a Z-drive which helps a lot with tight manuvers. Also the speed doesn't look right. I'm thinking the manuver was a little slower than it shows on the video.

Experience is the best teacher.
- We had a twin V8 inboard before our current boat for about 10yrs. Supposedly the ultimate in manuverability. Used it on summer weekends. I was comfortable handling it but there were places I wouldn't try.
- Our current boat has a single 25hp outboard but we've cruised full time on it doing the Great Loop mostly going in and out of marinas. Theoretically, it's far less manuverable but I'm comfortable taking it places I would never consider with the previous boat because I know how she will handle.

I think it is rather Schottel Rudderpropeller or even Schottel Pump Jet propulsion system.
Probably only Voith Schneider propeller offers more manoueverability for a vessel

Not sure the specifics but definetly not a simple shaft and rudder arrangement.

He probably actually did it so slow you would fall asleep watching it, esp. if it was his first time. Look at the traffic moving in the background.

He has got twin screws you can see the thrust change sides at the end.

Re: Anyone else think this guy could dock anything anyhwere?

Those are Professionals which learn it for years. Most of them start a a young age and then work there way up from deck to watch and then helm. For them it is just like driving a car then. I seen even better manoeuvres on commercial ferry catamarans (without bowtrusters and standard dual propdriven) going sideways into position solely steered by the 2 engine throttles. Always amazes me, but the guys are from a different league.
