An Old Dufus Hit My Docked Boat

I'm still coming down from an unbelievable afternoon which was unfortunately, not unexpected.

The offender lives across from me on a canal. He's new to boating.
His first boat is a 32 ish power boat with twin gas engines and lots of canvas.
I'll not bore you with details, but in ten knots of wind straight down the canal, he almost hit at least six boats repeatedly before he hit me.
The whole time (about a half hour) he had a "Deer in the Headlights" look except when he gave me the finger for hollering suggestions on how NOT to hit something expensive.
He did damage to our neighbors dock after hitting me.

I suffered a bent bow platform with a cruising spinnaker pole.

His 2cent twin gas power boat with full canvas topside doesn't have any obvious damage, but the whole thing is ugly and his USA flag is dull red, dirt colored white and is in tattered strips from the pole.
His house, and dock is, and has always been a total mess, inside and out.
I think you can fill in the blanks.
It took a call to the sheriff to finally get his insurance contacts, this after he went home to get drunk.
The sheriff met him an hour later !

Film at 11.

Sorry for your damage. Hope all gets fixed by his pocket. I don't know why some people act the way they do. I bet he thinks that your boat was the cause. You had it parked in the wrong Ocean. This needs to turn into a gun thread..just say'en..Michael..

From the OP's account, you are probably correct. The time for the brathalizer was before he left the scene.

This is why I always, always, always advise newbs on this forum that the first boat should be small. Tiny. Harmless.

Re: An Old Dufus Hit My Docked Boat

I have a 32 with a flybridge full of canvas so I appreciate the skill it takes on a windy day, but like I always tell my wife, I'll drive the boat onto a rocky shore or run it aground on purpose or scuttle it with a sledge hammer to the seacocks before I whack somebody else's boat. I had a bad night last summer when I misjudged the wind and killed one of the engines shifting. A million spectators stood on the docks and the shore yelling completely unhelpful advice -- as if I couldn't see I was heading for the rocks, thank you very much. "Hey, one of your engines is dead, start the engine!" Yeah, like I couldn't figure out why I was flopping in a circle and the starboard tachometer read 0. Bottom line, as embarassing as it was, and even though it was a hideous spectacle and people ran for their lives and somebody probably posted a "Launches Gone Bad" video on YouTube by now, when it was all over it was all ultimately okay because I never touched anybody else's boat. Rule #1 - don't whack anybody else's boat.

Ouch!
Sorry to hear!
At least most of the good weather is about gone for this season. Yesterday was the windy day. (winter repairs)

Isn't it great when jerks display their IQ when someone's trying to keep them at bay.

Re: An Old Dufus Hit My Docked Boat

I feel your pain. I have this all the time at my marina. There are about 2 dozen of us with wet slips and a few hundred with hi and dry slips. Despite the desire to use a 12 ga, I know I can't and all I can do is yell. But truth to tell I would really prefer the 12 ga. I guess this is definition of stress.

Re: An Old Dufus Hit My Docked Boat

Señor, sorry to hear about your bad day. But, as other comments have indicated, it would have been so much worse if you had hit someone else instead of being the guy who got whacked.

Good luck getting this irresponsible person to pay to repair the damage he caused.

FYI, I once was backing into my slip with a strong crosswind. Naturally, the throttle cable became disconnected at just the wrong time. Before I could take appropriate measures, I made a small scratch on my neighbor's boat. I wrote him an apologetic note and slipped it into his companionway. Cost me a few dollars, but it made me feel good to do the right thing. I still felt terrible about hurting his boat. I know how I would have felt to find a scratch on my baby.

All the best.

Bill

Re: An Old Dufus Hit My Docked Boat

I have been run into two times. One time the person denied that he did anything even thought we saw him do it. Later his boat sunk in Fiji after running up on a reef. What goes around sometimes comes around.

The other time a megayacht hit us while they were coming off anchor in a squall. The substitute captain on the megayacht was incompetent who hit us, and they paid us $2000 for the damage to our bow pulpit.

Some times you get lucky, and people pay you for the damage they do.

Re: An Old Dufus Hit My Docked Boat

I had a twin engine power boat smack my stern in a dock. Caused around $15k in damage. I had to track him down as he did it moving to another marina and tried to get away without making himself known. Ironically the boat was called "Golden Rule".

Glad he and I had insurance on that one. His paid for it all, but it took a while to find him so I had to tap my own policy first.

Re: An Old Dufus Hit My Docked Boat

Thanks everyone for your comments and concerns!
It's too bad the county sheriff's office had to get involved, but they were Johnny on the Spot!

Now it's up to the insurance agent to make it right.
