Air Force Rescues 2 Germans From Boat Fire Far Out at Sea

From the NY Times JULY 8, 2017,

MIAMI ó Air Force reserve personnel have rescued two German citizens after their sailboat caught fire far out at sea.
A news release Saturday from the 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, said the German father and son were rescued about 500 miles (800 kilometers) from the South Florida coast using long-range aircraft that refuel during flight.
Their names and hometowns were not immediately released. A base spokeswoman said the 48-year-old son suffered burns on his legs. He and his 66-year-old father were taken to an Orlando hospital.
The Air Force aircraft arrived with the two men in a lifeboat and a freighter approaching to help out. A pair of HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters hoisted the victims from the freighter and flew them to Florida, refueling in midair.

Got to love them Pedro's~!!...

Good to see my tax dollars at work.....

. When I was flying for various NGO's in Afghanistan, it was always comforting to have those guys on the same ramp as us..

Wow, nice rescue, glad they're safe now.

Keep telling about that fireproof bottom paint, but everybody thinks its a joke...

Some cool video of the rescuers here, and the midair refueling. No footage of actually hoisting the victims, though.

It's great that you know about the Pedros? Didn't know they still used that call sign.

Last time I was downrange in that part of the world they were using it.

My understanding it was resurecited from the Vietnam days and put back to use for USAF CSAR in Afghanistan.

Re: Air Force Rescues 2 Germans From Boat Fire Far Out at Sea

I think that's right. We had the Pedros (H-47) in the air at the Kaneohe Marine Corp Air Station whenever they were launching fighters in the late 60s and early 70s. My friend flew them and another marine F-4 pilot friend owned the Cal-40 "Esperance" (former Congressional Cup boat previously owned by Jack Linkletter, son of Art) which I raced on many times. Sorry, everyone else, had to get a little sailing talk in here to balance the non-nautical conversation.
