Oh.. and when I bought my Hunter Cherubini 37 I thought it was a big boat.. biggest I'd ever owned.
'as safe' works for me!

My first boat was a Mirror dinghy

Or guys with small boats will tell you, "It's not size that matters, it's how you use it" all the while they are wishing they had something bigger. Some of those are happy with big boats are smugly happy whilst others think it can be a burden.

Men in need of compensation are more likely to buy one of these

Never trust a shackle when going up a rig. Always tie your chair to the halyard and have a second line for back up. Brian Toss taught me that.

Really poor seamanship there and not even an attempt to deploy an anchor of any type
Just glad there werent any fatalities.

Small boats are awesome when trying to sail to windward in winds over 20 knots.

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

Nothing to do with the boat... It was pure complacency. The skipper races often, had negotiated the harbor entrance many times and just thought he could wing it in significantly stronger than typical winds. This is a common problem in the area where the winds are either too weak or too strong and many SoCal sailors have little experience with 20+ knot winds. I had a similar experience once with a broken strut, coming into MdR under sail alone in strong winds. Thankfully everything turned out fine but it required maximum concentration. Anyway, the size of the boat would have made no difference.

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

I watched the ids and my only question is what the heck happened to having a contingency plan and a backup to that. There wasnt even any attempt to deploy any an hors . Early in the vid they were heading south with some way and steerage they may have still grounded but they would have been south of the pier . Why did the skipper come about and make the situation worse ?

Re: Advantages to have a small boat

First real sailboat I had was a 23' New Zealand made sloop. Awesome boat. Bashed that thing interisland in Hawaii more times than I can remember. Just went up and down the swells. A couple boats later I'm up to 35'. More room, faster, dryer, a lot more systems to maintain. I sailed my 23 way more than my 35. Kinda like having a sports car and a big SUV. They both get you there, just with a different ride
