About to be slammed by IRMA Cat 5

Our Hylas 54 is on the hard in Nanny Cay BVI about to be slammed by IRMA. Boat is in a massive hurricane cradle (rather than just regular blocks and poles), strapped to the ground, and we stripped everything that moves off her, moused the halyards, etc. BUT a CAT 5 is a HUGE storm and we are worried that she will be wrecked. Luckily we are the southern most in the yard and will be pointing into the southerly wind.

We are in NY now so there is nothing more we can do now!

Question is: Who else has been through a category 5 on the hard...and how did you do?

Hurricane Irma is already one for the record books.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported the storm had become a Category 5 with sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. That means Irma now ranks among the most powerful hurricanes (as measured by windspeed) ever recorded.

According to the NWS, Irma is the strongest storm ever in the Atlantic (not counting those that reached the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico). And it’s not far off from the all-time record hurricane wind speed of 190 mph.

My state may be hit after it crosses the Florida keys. Or if it turns North at the Bahamas it may still hit my state.

Good luck to all. I would rather be in a boatyard than a marina any day when a hurricane comes through. Very unpredictable regarding the amount of wind as the speed drops off significantly away from the eye wall. Small distances from the eye can make a great deal of difference in wind speed. You may get lucky and just have torrential rain with survivable winds. I lived in Puerto Rico for five years and went through numerous hurricanes and tropical storms, and the predictions as to the path of the eye were often unreliable. I hope the same is true for you.

Hoping for all you that Irma turns and goes out into the Atlantic away from land.

I remember hurricane Fran that was in 1996. I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember everything I did the day it hit.

Hoping for the best possible outcome for you. Make sure your insurance is paid up and realize it's out of your hands now.

It looks like it may hit NC and SC instead of Florida now.

Re: About to be slammed by IRMA Cat 5

I have this super kind question if OP could possibly report the actual situation - the location, preparation done, maybe post a picture too.

And then one the hell passes over - to post their comments on what went right/wrong and let us know how they did.

Thinking about people coming to CF in the future to have some first hand reference of what gets done, how bad the situation gets, what options there are, etc.

This is a hell of a storm and very dangerous. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you guys, your boat and for all your neighbours there!

I watched Barbuda sensor before it got swept off. It showed 135kts in a gust on the W wall of the system. But I know that it got even worse as the baro sensor kept on working.

I directed my clients to Cuba where we hope the storm will turn N as it approaches Florida. Fingers crossed now and many, many fenders on those tall catamaran topsides.

Love and hugs to all in the zone,
barnakiel

Wish it was true
The paths I am looking at shows it smack in the middle of Florida.
As for hauling the boat and keep it on the hard: After Wilma in 2005 I wee over to Riverbend Marina in my neighborhood: Numerous sailboats survived but their masts was broken of sideways. Surprised me, but when the boat won't heel over and "give", the mast snap of like a match. Probably 10-12 boats had broken masts.
