When sailing in the south Pacific aboard a mono we always reefed the main sail and doused the genny and hung a five gallon bucket that was fitted with a garden hose on the bottom, at the goose neck, pulled out the soap and steered towards the leading edge, always got a real nice fresh water shower and topped off the potable tanks after everyone was finished washing and the deck was rinsed off. Now we did use the binoculars prior, to evaluate how intense the winds were and never had any problems. This was before watermakers.
