Yup! Another Newbie

Hello all pleased to meet you,

I am a newbie. Very newbie. I'm 53, male and just starting my first sailing lesson at the end of this month. I plan on buying a catamaran and sailing to Costa Rica or Panama in the next year or two. That's my plan anyway so, I'll have lots of questions for all you experienced sailors out there.

For now, I'm going to just read as much in the forums that I can and hopefully I can find the answers to most of my questions without become a pain in your butts.

Thanks and happy sailing to you all.

Welcome to CF Razoo!

First advice... PR and point South are preferred destinations over Alberta...

(and you thought this site was going to be helpful)

Welcome aboard!
In your case I think he meant CR-Costa Rica. PR = Puerto Rica

Just to get it out of the way, you'll ask someday, on this forum your anchor is too small, it's the wrong kind, and you don't have enough chain. Just don't use the A word. It causes no end of trouble.

It's bad enough that you said catamaran. That can cause trouble as well.

Ok, so, what's wrong with saying catamaran?

Aloha and welcome aboard!

What's wrong with saying "catamaran?" Well, you haven't had your first sailing lesson yet. Go to any marina and look around at all the boats. What percentage of those boats are catamarans? Should you be making up your mind as to what kind of boat your want before you have even stepped aboard your training vessel?

Truly there is nothing wrong with saying that you want to sail a catamaran or you want to sail around the world or any other statement. I'd just say that it's just a little early to tell what you really like.

My experience is that I like sailing everything I can get my hands on but I don't care for the motion of a catamaran at sea and I don't like that they can't point to weather very well. They are initially much more stable than the monohulls I've sailed though so they have that.

Re: Yup! Another Newbie

SkiprJohn I decided on a catamaran because like you say they are much more stable than the monohull. I figured me being new it would be the best for me. Maybe after 2 or 3 years I will have the experience behind me not to do something stupid that would put me upside down with a monohull but not a multi-hull.

Oh Razoo, you've done it now! Catamaran vs Monohull is like discussing religion.
Just having fun with you. There are actually many good discussions about the merits of each.

"SkiprJohn I decided on a catamaran because like you say they are much more stable than the monohull."

The counter to that statement is that they are also stable when they are upside down. That's why they put escape hatches in catamaran hulls.

Re: Yup! Another Newbie

Hi Razoo, welcome aboard. Cats are initially stable, but don't have ultimate stability (if you did manage to capsize a cruising cat, (unlikely) it will stay upside down. A good monohull is more forgiving, but less initially stable. In the same wind gust that may tip a full sailed cat, the monohull will just heel over, then when the gust is gone, stand itself back upright. A monohull CANNOT be capsized by wind, only knocked down. Waves, on the other hand, and capsize anything! Don't be in too much of a rush to pick anything. There are good and bad examples of both monohulls and cats. Oh yes, cats (for the same length boat) generally cost more to buy and to maintain than the same size mono.
Cheers, and enjoy your lessons!!
Matt
