Aloha and welcome aboard!
Thanks for your service. When I retired from the Navy my goal was to live off the retirement check. It worked for me but luckily no one took all my money and maxed out my credit cards and I had some cash from the sale of a home.
I think it was the Jeep she was laughing at not you. When I retired I had an 83 Mazda pickup and an 86 Mazda pickup. Pretty laughable too. At least one had a canopy on it.
It can be done and you can get a fixer upper and do pretty well. It takes a lot of fixing and learning but it can be done. You seem to already be living frugally.
Good luck

Thanks John, unfortunately my plans just took a serious hit due to my trust in people. I responded to an add on craigs list and went to look at a 27 ft Pearson on Sunday. It was nice so I agreed to $8k. Went Monday to make the deal only to be met by the "seller" with a gun. Turns out it wasn't even his boat. So I am out $8K and the police have only my description of the guy with the gun, but no description of the one who opened my head with some blunt object. Needless to say I am thoroughly discouraged and not even sure if I will even pursue sailing now. It will take me years to save enough anyway. Life sucks when you trust people.
