Want to experience the Panama Canal mid July 2017

I am in my third month of travel and am visiting Panama City for the first time. As part of my experience in Panama, I would like to help out with lines or anything else if you will be boating through the Panama Canal in the next week. Ideally I would like to get off at Portobello or any other spot that has boats going to the San Blas Islands but if that is not possible, Colon is fine. The two most common places to pick up a line handler position are Balboa Yacht Club and Shelter Bay Marina. Both are places where yachts await transit and have bulletin boards to post your availability.

Be cautious of the San Blas-Colombia charter trade. There are a lot of substandard boats whose drunk/stoned/asleep/incompetent captains put their boats up on the reefs in the San Blas...usually a few of them each year. Search on line for the bad experiences on this route.

If you dont manage to hitch a ride, or even if you do, I suggest going to the visitors center at Miraflores locks. It houses an extensive and very well done exhibit on the history and construction of the canal. And you can see both old a new locks in operation.

Thanks. I was going to go to the canal museum today or tomorrow if I don't go to the locks. I am going to check out Selkirk Marina and Balboa Club today. Rented a bike for the day.
