Thanks guys! Well, I think I may have pinpointed the problem and it is the unit itself! So looks like I'll be using that stick in the mud until this "starving artist" can sell some coloring to buy a new one.

Wheels, I understand your concern about this thread... but we certainly did a good job of taking it in a different direction...and now maybe we can just leave it alone and I'll post chapter two of my dilemna on another thread.
