Hello all!

I grew up on Lake Michigan sailing a tiny styrofoam bathtub my dad polyurethaned with a blue bottom (I think it was called a SeaSnark!) Many years later I subscribed to Lats & Atts and developed my interest in cruising, but I was still freezing in the north! So finally, I'm living in the Florida Keys where living on a boat doesn't raise any eyebrows. We don't live on a boat yet, but we have friends that spend extended summers in the Bahamas and we get our 'taste' of it while visiting them.

Hoping to learn lots from this forum. Never thought to look for a forum on this before but I'm glad I found it What could be better than getting the info directly from people who have first-hand knowledge!

OK, that might be a record for getting started. Let's hope the end of the story turns out a lot better. If it floats we have the resources however should any styrofoam bath tub questions come up again ever - you are the one! That includes phone calls home to your dad for details. Everybody does something they know or we just can't handle all the questions.

I hope you can find what you are looking for or maybe just something you were not looking for. We really do have a lot of resources. Welcome aboard!

The early Snarks were indeed made of expanded polystyrene (“Styrofoam”). Yours was probably a Snark “Sea Skimmer”.

You having experienced times in the Bahamas with friends is a great plus. You already understand what you are in for. Cruising, and even weekend sailing is not for the faint of heart. It is loaded with work, and some worrisome times, but that is the small percentage. The rewards are HUGE, and well worth it for me......BEST WISHES in finding your place in the sun!

Thanks for the welcome everyone! And I appreciate learning that the Snark was probably a Sea Skimmer. Most people have no idea what I'm talking about when I try to describe it!

I see a few catamaran owners here - that is currently what we're in the market for. I'll be asking some opinions in another thread about those :-)

Welcome aboard! Yes, there are still a few Snarks afloat and I see them on eBay from time to time. It really got a lot of folks interested in sailing for just a little bit of cash so they had their place.
