Thinkin' Caribbean, Livin' Minnesota

Hello.
My name's Neil...my home is Minneapolis..my head is on the water somewhere between Vieques, Puerto Rico and Kinsale, Ireland.
I'm sailing when I can on Superior and will be chartering in the Caribbean this winter.
I look forward to picking all of your brains until I'm off-shore in my own vessel gaining some knowledge that I could then relate back to others.

Thanks for having me.
Neil

Timshel,
Welcome to the site....I think you will find it an invaluable resource.
I am currently in the Mid East earning money for my cruise. I sail my Moody 33 C/C on the St Croix river....can't wait to get back to it this Spring!

Earning money to cruise the States?! Interesting. Do you happen to know how feasible it is to year round liveaboard anywhere near the Cities? If so, where?

Timshel,
It's very doable...I have lived in Downtown St Paul, Harriet Island at the SPYC yacht club for the last 13 years...(did a couple Fall/winters in Key West on the sailboat, tho). They have 25 spots granted by the city specifically for Liveaboards. I have had 3 different boats during my time there. Currently it is a 50 ft steel "floating cabin" with a raised roof in the kitchen and dinning area. Lot's of windows and a million dollar view! Also, it is a Non-profit Marina, formed in 1913 and just happens to be the best equiped, most modern, friendliest and cheapest spot in the state. I love it there (don't tell anyone!) Membership for liveaboard is $1,000, same price last 13 years. Eventually you get it back through discounts on slip fee's. There are at least 3 other marinas nearby that also offer liveaboard...without the membership, but fee's are a little higher, as they are privately owned. I like my location in the city (it's always quiet after 5pm and I am right downtown.

Slip prices are much less than you pay in Superior and you get a longer season and better weather to boot.

Welcome to the forum
Dont forget houston, though the drive to the city is 30 minutes(non traffic hours!!). Houston is handling the "economic down turn" pretty well or at least better than most. The live aboard scene is good with no restrictions (except a minimum of 30 ft length for live aboards). Marinas are pretty cheap, lots of marine stores so a good place to refit a vessel. Bay is shallow with many obstructions, oil rigs first hundred miles offshore so you get a good navigation work out (thats my spin on it).
Happy sailing,
Erika

PS
and the best reason to live in houston......NO winters here!!

Thanks to all...The idea as I see it currently is buying a boat, liveaboard in the twin cities area, refit for a few years and build up a kitty....sail out of the great lakes, down to the Caribbean and onward. Thanks again for the thoughts and info. This is a very welcoming board and is very appreciated!
