That's about as wrong a way to think about a voyage as you possibly can.
First of all, you're safer away from land than close to land. If your sense of
security is tied to being able to "see land most of the way" then you probably don't have sufficient navigational skills.
Second, the attitude that "the coast guard would be around the corner if something did happen" is flat-out wrong. If you don't feel that you fix your own problems without summoning aid, you don't belong out there. Too many newbies these days are pushing the
epirb panic buttons just because they've gotten a bit seasick and feel terrified by the conditions. They are being rescued from boats that are perfectly sound and are able to handle the conditions at hand. We see this happen all the time: the boats just continue floating along fine once they've been abandoned by crew who shouldn't have been aboard in the first place.
Sorry to be so frank, but from what you've posted here I honestly question whether you're ready for
offshore sailing.
