Re: The Next Step ! Need a Little Advice

Aha, a "swing keel" (a.k.a. centerboard) means you should take one of these with you on the trip or whenever you are in salt water for an extended period of time.

You use it to remove all the sea critters that love to take up residence in the keel trunk and eventually prevent you from raising and/or lower the keel.

They can be bought or found in bazaars or flea markets or on the web at: Kumagoro Full Size Ryoba Saw at Tools For Working Wood

Will you be trailering your boat to the East coast of Florida or sailing it there?

That's about as wrong a way to think about a voyage as you possibly can.

First of all, you're safer away from land than close to land. If your sense of security is tied to being able to "see land most of the way" then you probably don't have sufficient navigational skills.

Second, the attitude that "the coast guard would be around the corner if something did happen" is flat-out wrong. If you don't feel that you fix your own problems without summoning aid, you don't belong out there. Too many newbies these days are pushing the epirb panic buttons just because they've gotten a bit seasick and feel terrified by the conditions. They are being rescued from boats that are perfectly sound and are able to handle the conditions at hand. We see this happen all the time: the boats just continue floating along fine once they've been abandoned by crew who shouldn't have been aboard in the first place.

Sorry to be so frank, but from what you've posted here I honestly question whether you're ready for offshore sailing.

Welcome and best wishes preparing for your dream cruise. Watch the weather very carefully, crossing the Gulf Stream can be deadly in heavy weather. Explorer charts are a must for the Bahamas. Also, be mindful that everything is more expensive in the Bahamas.

Not just in the Gulf Stream, but anywhere you have wind against current, short steep waves build, making passages uncomfortable at best, dangerous at worst. In this specific case, since the Stream flows south to north, a wind from the north does bad things to the water. People have reported seeing "elephants" marching down the straits, which is a time to curl up with a good book and wait for better weather.
