The Great Idea !

ahoy, Ive NEVER sailed and im going to buy a yacht and head off into the Pacific and find that damn inner peace and happiness people tell me about (we are middle aged so timing is right)Ive got charts and an idea where i want to go and im excited. The wife has sort of agreed to come on stints, so i suppose i keep lookin till the right yacht presents itself , hey.
Hope to see some of you on the water . . . (what could possibly go wrong!)

Oh, one thing you overlooked. If you wait for the "right" yacht you could be on shore for decades debating on this forum. Recommend you go for the almost right yacht.

Plenty of things can and will go wrong, but that's ok. Unless they involve drowning, you will overcome them. Kind of like life in general.

And that "damn inner peace" and so forth is out there. It will sneak up on you when you least expect it.

Your posting had a fimilar story to it. When I was reading the above in my mind it was going to say 'The wife has sort of agreed to come on strints, so i suppose i ....replace her once the rigfht yatch presents itself'! Must be in a good frame of mind this morning.

The inner peace is NOT in the Pacific!!!!!!!!!

If you want to be better at being a human, or 'finding' yourself then sit right down where you are right now and learn.

Beacuse sailing for a decade ain't gunna teach you nothing like that.

Nic is just the same person now. And I am just the same person too. Sailing has changed nothing. If we were a$$holes then, the great Pacific ain't gunna change it.


Go sailing, and you will love it! The Pacific is wonderful! But you will jus be you
Maybe with that knowledge you will find you are actually quite an oK person and don't really need to 'change'

5 years ago I had never sailed. 3 years ago I bought my first boat with the intention of learning how to sail and then upgrading to a real cruising boat that my wife and I would be comfortable in. However it was my dream, not hers. She said it was not in the contract we signed 22 years ago. Because I was a newbie I lacked competence and she was justifiably nervous. So I did courses and lessons and read heaps to improve my abilities. When I get the chance I occasionally crew on deliveries on friends boats. However the trick has been to make sure each outing on our boat was one my wife enjoyed. So we don't go out when it's blowing too hard, I ease the sheets to make sure the boat is not healing too much and I don't yell (anymore). Guess what, now she's the one inviting friends out for a sail on the boat and she wants to drive all the time and I have been relegated to sail trimmer and head unblocker etc. However, it's a nice change from trying to drag her along on my dream.

When we was kids it was easy to tell if the movie was any good. It would say: Staring John Wayne... and a whole bunch of guys.... its a shoot 'em up.

Taking lessons is a good idea - together. Plan on spending a year sailing in some place like Puget Sound where there are always hidey holes to get out of the weather. Go easily at first, and go as a couple. You have a bajillion things to learn, and you probably know no more than she does, so do it together. But do it. I am beginning the construction of my twentieth [?I think?] boat, the second ocean going one. It is fun. Oh, and any year in which you have not been terrified at least once is probably a wasted year ... You won't 'waste' any years sailing .....

Laughter. When I first read this I thought you were suggesting that Mark take some guitar lessons with Nic. They could become the next Indigo Girls, yes.

Welcome to the forum, bvh. My advice would be to involve the wife from the beginning. If she helps pick the boat, those stints might be longer.

yep BASH & others; thanks to this lil introduction to the yachting community and advise ;Lisa is on board (getit) and now the pretty one is picking out "things " on boats we need or should be looking for.
for a couple of hard workin land dwellers , you mob have moved us coastwards and are going to book a bareboat charter for August .
