Re: Taking the Plunge in the PNW

Tide going out, Large swells/wind waves from an offshore storm coming in to the sound. Admiralty inlet is basically a compression point. On my boat, a Columbia 45, I had waves splashing all the way back to my cockpit enclosure. Burried the bow quite a few times. Made my way tot eh SE of Protection Island and turned around and went back to Port Townsend for the night. From Squim to Port Townsend the land effects are quite interesting for the water conditions.

Re: Taking the Plunge in the PNW

Actually the waves were probably more like 11'-12' @5 sec. It was bad.

Re: Taking the Plunge in the PNW

Hi from the PNW, Cool water and all. Were headed to the Salish Sea this summer for a month or so of cooler weather than here where it's 80+ already, crusing down the Columbia River to the Pacific 330 miles and north to the Strait of Jun d Fucia and the San Juan Islands will be our second ocean cruse. I've found a great chartplotter with XM weather helps if you need to know swell hight and period before you swamp your deck. There's a kewl site to visit www.PNWsailors.com with regular meet up's and a big party for crusers at Sucia Island in August. There's already about 100 boats going to show up and the next weekend at Friday Harbor the Latt's and Att's crusers party that last year 160 some boats showed up. See you out there sv 'We Be Jammin'

Re: Taking the Plunge in the PNW

Six years ago we left Seattle heading north between Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast to start our life afloat. After rounding Cape Scott, we kept going south and are now into our third year in the Caribbean. You can read about some of the places we stopped in our on-line cruise log at: Log of Yachtsman's Dream. Chapter one is likely to interest you most at the moment but we also have some chapters that discuss cruising in Sea of Cortez. If you have any specific questions PM me.
